Why I Am a Liberal (Not trolling - Jist food for thought)
useless knowledge ^ | Warren C. Norwood

Posted on 02/18/2005 2:52:25 PM PST by loe joe

Some of my friends, family members, and co-workers wonder how I could be a political liberal in the midst of this new swell of conservatism the United States. The answers to that are all too simple.

I am a liberal because the system originated by liberals called Social Security has made my parents' retirement more possible and comfortable than it would otherwise have been.

I am a liberal because the system originated by liberals called Medicare paid for my mother to have two knees and a hip replaced at a cost that otherwise could not have been born by all of her children together.

I am a liberal because Medicare paid for my father's operation to remove a cancerous kidney at a cost that would otherwise certainly have forced my parents to liquidate their assets.

I am a liberal because that system originated by liberals called WIC gives my daughter food stamps for cheese and milk and other necessities she needs to feed her children.

I am a liberal because that system demanded by liberals called company-paid employee medical insurance helps pay doctor bills for me and my wife and my daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren and sister and most of my other close relatives.

I am a liberal because the idea of autonomy of the individual is a liberal idea.

I am a liberal because the idea of political liberty is a liberal idea.

I am a liberal because government by the consent of the governed is a liberal idea.

I am a liberal because the Bill of Rights is a set of liberal ideas which protect us all. Freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of worship, freedom of the press, due process of law, freedom from torture, the right to face our accusers, the writ of habeas corpus, and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure are all liberal ideas. Most people in the world do not have those rights.

I am a liberal because those liberal ideas in our Constitution give us control of our representatives from the school board to the Senate and President of the United States, give us the liberal idea of checks and balances, and the liberal idea of no taxation without representation.

I am a liberal because the idea of public education is a liberal idea.

I am a liberal because the idea of a five day work week is a liberal idea.

I am a liberal because the idea of a strong, well funded and disciplined military under civilian control is a liberal idea, as is the notion of Veteran's benefits and military retirement.

I am a liberal because the Geneva Conventions are a liberal idea. The conventions protect American prisoners and all prisoners of signees from torture and abuse.

I am a liberal because the idea of the public maintenance of roads is a liberal idea.

I am a liberal because civil rights, children's rights, women's rights, and labor rights, are all liberal ideas.

I am a liberal because almost all the progressive ideas of the last four centuries have been liberal ideas resisted by the conservatives of their times. Those liberal ideas make this a better place to live for me, my family, my friends, my community, my country, and my world.

I ask people who insist on repudiating liberalism to please check off the liberal ideas above they are ready to do without.

The key issue here is identifying the exact meaning of the word liberal and the word conservative.

Although dictionary definition does fit some of the pretexts of your statements, almost none of the 'liberal' politicians (which the Democratic party latched onto) conduct themselves in a manner which fits those definitions.

Here is another definition of LIBERAL , listed as OBSCURE, meaning old, meaning ignored and rebranded for easier acceptance by the majority so that the Dems could appeal to that majority.

LIBERAL: Morally unrestrained; licentious.

Now that fits the behavior of the current crop of Democratic Politicians that cling to the LIBERAL TAG.

This is really what you are identifying yourself with, by using the label LIBERAL.

There is nothing wrong with being a liberal minded person. The danger is that the current DEM party wants to suck you in by having you believe their idea of liberal is the same as yours.

The DEM polits don't care what 'flag' they fly. They picked it because being liberal is the opposite of hard-line. In other words, avoiding prosecution by using the words of the law, instead of the meaning of the law. Getting the public to feel it is OK to violate the law, because there are just reasons, sometimes.

Like Bill lying to the Supreme Court about Monica. It was just about sex. Nothing important. (Oh yeah, there is a law against lying in court!) But liberals wanted to give him a pass. Their own lives are full of deceit and wrongdoing, so it is easy to make excuses for the President.

Go, look up the word LIBERAL in the dictionary, see what it says. Look up CONSERVATIVE, see what it says.

In the current situation CONSERVATIVES believe in the law, and the country, and adherence to the laws.

LIBERALS are at the opposite pole, are they not? The LEFT vs. the RIGHT?

So LIBERALS believe in finding ways around the law, and this country is not their major concern. Only their wealth and power is a concern.

And those liberal politicians would kill you, a self-proclaimed liberal, to keep that power and wealth, without a second thought.

Any sentence starting with "me" would be incorrect. The first person pronoun always goes closest to the verb or the preposition. My brother and I went to the store ...fits the rule as well as...My sister gave me and my brother noogies.

Hey Liberal,

I know this is real hard for you to understand but the reason health care and education costs are sky-high is precisely BECAUSE the government subsidizes them, which dramatically raises their costs. If there were no medicare, student loans etc. etc, a heart operation would probalby cost about a thousand dollars and a year of college would be 500 dollars. That's because all this "guvmint" money is competing with the rest of the private money in the economy.

In any event, these things would cost far less than they cost now.

So if you took all of the "government" i.e. taxpayer, money out of the equation, everything would be a lot less expensive and people could afford these things on their own.

Then why did the Southern Democrats (including Al Gore Sr.) vote against the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

You got him there! I wonder if he knows George Wallace was a democrat.

In the spirit of the DU Funnies:

Some of my friends, family members, and co-workers wonder how I could be a political liberal in the midst of this new swell of conservatism the United States. The answers to that are all too simple.

I am a liberal because the system originated by liberals called Social Security has made my parents' retirement more possible and comfortable than it would otherwise have been.

The "liberal" who created it wanted private accounts, and only intended it to last until 1965, when the first wave of post WWII children would be able to take care of their parents, or the working parents would have a reasonable pension (but all the liberal scumbag unions stole most of that)

I am a liberal because the system originated by liberals called Medicare paid for my mother to have two knees and a hip replaced at a cost that otherwise could not have been born by all of her children together.

Another program where the poor, or irresponsible, lacking any insurance plan, steal from the working stiffs, and give to the poor.

I am a liberal because Medicare paid for my father's operation to remove a cancerous kidney at a cost that would otherwise certainly have forced my parents to liquidate their assets.

Ditto

I am a liberal because that system originated by liberals called WIC gives my daughter food stamps for cheese and milk and other necessities she needs to feed her children.

Another liberal requirement of irresponsible liberal parents, bordering on social Munchhausen, failing to teach their daughters to keep their legs crossed, and their eyes on a good education.

I am a liberal because that system demanded by liberals called company-paid employee medical insurance helps pay doctor bills for me and my wife and my daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren and sister and most of my other close relatives.

Good conservative companies offered valuable insurance plans long before some bureaucrat liberal scumbag had to make it a law. This in the grand tradition, forced everybody to pay more and get less, and was the spark that created the unaffordable system we have today

I am a liberal because the idea of autonomy of the individual is a liberal idea. You are a liberal because being an ignorant leach is easier than working hard and achieving financial independence

I am a liberal because the idea of political liberty is a liberal idea.

Liberty has nothing to do with being a liberal. Liberty is the bedrock of all conservative values.

I am a liberal because government by the consent of the governed is a liberal idea.

A Conservative would demand that the government be held to the standards of it's founders, a liberal believes only in the tyranny of the masses.

A Conservative will fight and die for these principles, a liberal turns immediately into a socialist Frenchman the first time they are held accountable to the bill of rights as penned by the founders.

I am a liberal because those liberal ideas in our Constitution give us control of our representatives from the school board to the Senate and President of the United States, give us the liberal idea of checks and balances, and the liberal idea of no taxation without representation.

Again, Ignorance prevails, because the from the school boards to the oval office, liberal brainwashing has perverted the concepts, to the point of absurdity.

I am a liberal because the idea of public education is a liberal idea. Public (factory) (indoctrination) is a tool of the despot, giving control and responsibility over to the government, allowing the poison of social liberalism to seep in and destroy a society from the roots up.

I am a liberal because the idea of a five day work week is a liberal idea.

Liberals don't work, they leach and game the system, depending on the governmental confiscation of wealth to support them.

I am a liberal because the idea of a strong, well funded and disciplined military under civilian control is a liberal idea, as is the notion of Veteran's benefits and military retirement. Not even close enough to reality to comment on.

I am a liberal because the Geneva Conventions are a liberal idea. The conventions protect American prisoners and all prisoners of signees from torture and abuse.

Then move to Geneva, Conservatives will do what it takes when necessary, to protect their own. I hope for you it never comes down to kill or be killed, because I'm going to bet on the other guy.

I am a liberal because the idea of the public maintenance of roads is a liberal idea.

The public infrastructure was created and maintained for military readiness, not any liberal hogwash you might believe in.

I am a liberal because civil rights, children's rights, women's rights, and labor rights, are all liberal ideas.

And dogs rights, and fish's rights and and and and and.. 372 more amendments and you're still not done. GROW UP. I am a liberal because almost all the progressive ideas of the last four centuries have been liberal ideas resisted by the conservatives of their times. Those liberal ideas make this a better place to live for me, my family, my friends, my community, my country, and my world.

Wrong, wrong, and um.. wrong again. Not one historical image of the society you describe has ever flourished on this planet. all have failed miserably.

I ask people who insist on repudiating liberalism to please check off the liberal ideas above they are ready to do without.

Freedom, liberty, equality, financial independence are all conservative values. Nothing you have listed gets you one step closet to it because you willfully ignore the key that makes it all work - responsibility.

IMNSHCO.

"I am a liberal because the system originated by liberals called Social Security has made my parents' retirement more possible and comfortable than it would otherwise have been. "

Correction: Social Security has robbed most people of a REAL RETIREMENT, because if the funds were really invested in a REAL MUTUAL FUND conservatively your parents would have 6 figures in the bank to live on.

But the PONZI SCHEME is nothing but new people coming in to support the ones before that have been RIPPED OFF!

The Government Workers in Galveston Texas are a lot happier on their retirement where they OPTED OUT of SOCIAL SECURITY.

Living Large in TEXAS on 50 K a Year.
