GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- Depending on where Americans live, on Monday they'll be celebrating the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington, or Washington's birthday and President Abraham Lincoln's birthday. A recent Gallup Poll asking Americans to name, without prompting, the "greatest United States president," finds Americans most often mentioning Ronald Reagan. Republicans and Democrats differ sharply in their views of the greatest president, with Republicans most often mentioning Reagan and Democrats most often mentioning Bill Clinton. When asked to choose the greater president between Lincoln and Washington, Americans pick Lincoln by a wide margin.

Reagan Tops List

The poll, conducted Feb. 7-10, finds that Reagan is mentioned more often than any other president in history as the greatest, at 20%. Four other presidents trail closely behind: Clinton (with 15% of the mentions), Lincoln (14%), Franklin D. Roosevelt (12%), and John F. Kennedy (also 12%). The current president, George W. Bush, and the first president, Washington, are each mentioned by 5% of Americans.

From a Conservative stand point, I can see how Clinton might be seen favorably -- he got us the legislative and executive branches of government. He also went along with some of the most conservative legislation in history -- Welfare Reform, NAFTA, etc.

From a Liberal stand point, I can't think of a single positive thing he did for them -- other than wear the Democrat label.

Actually, it's an indictment of Clinton, IMHO..look 50% or so of the country is BLUE, right?..and for probably 90% of Democrats alive today the only Dem president they can relate to, besides Clinton, is Carter..I actually expected he would win the thing..which would have been even funnier..

Well, I guess it only proves most Americans are not as partisan as we are here.

Clinton's still trying to have some kind of legacy. Problem is that none of his accomplishments are listed. By the way...What were his accomplishments, BL?

:)

Clinton shouldn't even rate among people who know history.

Open your narrow mind, CG. :)

31% of Democrats said "Clinton." How much you want to bet that the VAST majority of these were women?

Sadly, what this poll really reveals is that a good many American's "historical perspective" only goes back about ten years. I'd be willing to bet that in less than 50 years, Bill Clinton will be ranked right along side Millard Fillmore and James Buchanan.

In some ways I agree on Clinton. If it wasn't for Bubba, they wouldn't have lost the House, the Senate (fewest senators since the depression), governorships, and the White House. He has done my side proudly.

Clinton is decent choice, but FDR did nothing but buy votes with borrowed money and JFK is the most over rated person in human history.

Agreed. I have yet to hear a reputable historian with the take on Lincoln that DiLosero has.

Opps, missed your point. But I stand by my comment. DiLorenzo is packing an agenda-tinted perspective on Lincoln. His book is less a critique on Lincoln, and more a critique on DiLorenzo's own warped view of history.

this just shows the ignorance of the American public in general.......how pathetic that many citizens have no concept of history and it's importance......all they care about is their new MP3 player........disgusting....
