My seventh grader is doing a science fair project involving "handedness". She needs a larger sample for her data. If you would like to help, please do the following: clasp your hands together with your fingers intertwined. Report which thumb is on top and if you are right or left handed. Thanks for your help! Standing outside the grocery store didn't work, even with tootsie rolls as a thank you. People were too afraid we were selling something!
right thumb on top, left handed
Left thumb on top - right handed.
Right thumb, right handed
p.s. The science Teacher is really boring.
Student extends arms out straight, crosses-over wrists, clasps fingers, pulls clasped hands under (towards chest) then over on top facing upward.
Point to student's finger (don't touch) and have them try to move it.
Right handed....left thumb on top
You folks are the best!!!!!
Thanks so much for all the help, toostsie rolls for all. I'm off to the FR-less wasteland known as "work" so I won't be able to report back until later tonight, but so far the results are interesting and unexpected. That's a good thing. Based on a very small sample (two!) she hypothesized that lefties would put right thumb on top and righties would put left thumb on top.
I think the judges love it when you can't prove your own hypothesis so this is a good thing.
So far more righties put left on top and more lefties also put left on top. But I don't think either data set is going to be statistically significant. In other words, I think it may be random or another unknown factor may affect it.
But that's for her to figure out in the next few weeks. I'll do my own analysis tonight and compare FReeper results to her other 200 or so subjects.
Thanks again everyone!
Left thumb on top; right handed.
Right handed. Left thumb on top.
(Was forced to be right-handed as a child.)
Right thumb on top, right handed
I don't think you're a freak Rosie. Maybe it's a sign of creativity. :-)
Me? Same. Right handed, left thumb on top.
However, I am convinced that I have memories of writing with my left hand before I started school, and being forced to write with my right hand. I think it explains my lifelong problem with illegible handwriting.
Or maybe I'm just lazy.
(Am I gay?)"
Only your hairdresser knows for sure :-)
Maybe you're dyslexic!
So then the experiment should actually focus on the pinky on the bottom! Regardless of the reasons for the top thumb, would be interesting to see how many right handers put the right pinky on the bottom or vice versa, and is it related to handedness at all.
Maybe its related to the religion.. As a Catholic attending Catholic education most of my life, I did a lot of hand clasping... Hmmm... Maybe it was Mrs Youngbloods fault that my right pinky is on the bottom! I demand reparations!
Right-handed.
Left thumb over right.
Happy science project!
Am I normal? If so, that would be a first! :-)
When I fold my hands it's stems back from how the nuns 'taught' us how to fold our hands way back when.
I tried having my left thumb on top and that just feels really freaky.
And I'm just the opposite...right thumb on top makes the universe out of sync...
Perhaps just an apprehension that a smack of a ruler may be imminent. ;)
(It was a joke! :o)
Left thumb on top, right-handed.
right thumb on top
right handed with left thumb on top. Tail between legs.
