Media lynch mob tries to out-blog the bloggers (and fails miserably)
JWR ^ | 2-15-05 | Jack Kelly

Posted on 02/15/2005 5:10:24 AM PST by FlyLow

Real fear is mixing with snarky disdain in the "mainstream" media's attitude toward web loggers in the wake of the resignation last Friday of Eason Jordan as CNN's top news executive.

"Bloggers as News Media Trophy Hunters," said the headline in the New York Times Monday, the first time many of the newspaper's readers were made aware of a controversy which had been roiling for nearly two weeks.

"The New York Times media beat reporters got beaten badly on the Eason Jordan story — by (gasp!) web logs and cable news — and so how do they react? By catching their readers up on what they missed? Of course not. They react by lashing out at web logs," said Jeff Jarvis, whose views were misrepresented in the Times' story.

Web loggers who criticized Jordan are "sons of Sen. McCarthy," said Bertrand Pecquerie, director of the World Editors Forum. "It is very worrying to see this marriage between self-proclaimed citizens' media and mainstream journalists' scalp hunters," he said.

"The salivating morons who make up the lynch mob prevail," said Steve Lovelady, who edits the web site of the Columbia Journalism Review. For those of you unfamiliar with the controversy — that is to say, for those of you who get your news from the "mainstream" media — in a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland Jan. 27, Jordan said the U.S. military was deliberately killing journalists in Iraq. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass), a fellow panelist, demanded proof, which Jordan couldn't supply.

Miami businessman Rony Abovitz, who was in attendance, reported on what Jordan said in his web log. This was read by big foot bloggers Hugh Hewitt, Ed Morrissey (Captains Quarters), Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit) and the gang at Power Line, who expressed outrage.

The MSM mediots are shocked to discover they are not universally loved and adored.

What a bunch of petulant children. They know they have been caught lying and are not trying to squirm their way out of their lies.

The MSM does not have a lock on the opinion market. Free speech will be the end of the MSM.

"Bloggers as News Media Trophy Hunters"

It's not as if they are making it difficult. The trophies are there for the taking. They have provided us with a target rich environment.

The MSM can't handle public REACTION and critique of their story. For too long the MS thought reaction to the limited stories they covered where kooky old retirees who write letters to the newspapers.

I think the MSM was shocked to discover the MAJORITY of the nation is conservatie and now the MAJORITY OF POLITICAL NEWS CONSUMERS are conservative too!

It's worse than that.

They believe the news comes into existence when they report it, and that it is news BECAUSE they report it.

That's why bloggers bother them so much. They have caused the MSM to lose control of what is news. And that was about 90% of their power.

It is very difficult for those who thrived in a limited-access system to compete in a free market.

I bet the voices which are screaching loudest have their own skeletons to hide.

Imagine how bad it must have been for CNN to fire one of their own. One of their own with a long history of left wing favortism. The bosses must not have only seen the tape, they must know of more comments which would further reduce CNN.

The colleges teach "activist journalism" from textbooks. They make, break, and coerce these Bolsheviks from the first day of class. None of us would be able to stand the coercion, the bias, the worldview, and the obnoxiousness of the assignments, the books, and the professors. Only a true believing left wing fascist can emerge from the journalism programs.

Oh so true and that includes the so called Sports Journalists who are as liberal as the rest

And that is why when you see Conservative Editorial writers sydicated columnists etc etc they come from a different background and are NOT College Journalism Majors

When it comes to the future of journalism, the New York Times is like a dinosaur. The dinosaurs had two ton bodies and two ounce brains, so they were dimly aware that they were alive.

The Times is acting like the blogosphere picked off Eason Jordan at random. just to show we could. That ducks the question of whether Jordan's behavior was an insult to journalism, and the Times itself, were it an honest newspaper, should have been calling for Jordan's head even before we did.

And isn't it interesting that the slanderous and libelous statement by Steve Lovelady, Managing Editor of Columbia Journalism Review, keeps cropping up? Either we are "slavering morons" and a "lynch mob," or people who agree with Lovelady are journalistic fools.

Which do you think it is? Click below to participate in the "slavering morons" thread.

I keep thinking about the invention of the printing press -- remember how in school we all learned what an important event that was? One of the changes it created in the society of the time was to make the Bible accessible to everyone so they could read it for themselves. And THAT led to the rise of the reformists and Protestant denominations.

In several hundred years, will history point to the rise of weblogs as the same kind of turning point because the MSM is no longer the only conduit between the people and interpreter of events?

"What's that sound I hear? The empty vacuum of irrelevance? This is getting fun to watch!"

It IS getting fun to watch! Everywhere you turn, things are happening that would not have been possible just a few years before now. Eason Jordan would have been ignored by mainstream, and so would rathergate. Its all happening so fast and the demwit media is seeing their world crumble around their ears. Not only the alphabets and the leftist cable shows, but lefty rag newspapers are in decline also.

I just hope that its the end of DemonRats, and that a new, truly centrist Party is built from the ashes. If for no other reason than to avoid any future corruption of the Republican party. A really viable, (Truly centrist party, not a fake like Shrillary) party that will leave the leftist, socialist, America haters behind and just keep the Republicans from being complacent. Keep everyone fresh and focused on making the US better instead of tearing it down like the DUmmies, and socialists would.
