Prayers are going up for you Tony. My Dad was diagnosed with colon cancer eight years ago and had surgery and low-grade chemo for a year. (he didn't even lose his hair) He had another colonoscopy on this Valentines Day and all was well. Hang in there.

Andrew Napilitano (?sp) subbing for Tony today--I think he said he was scheduled for a CT scan and then schedule surgery ASAP.

Prayers abound. It is in God's hands and the faith on this thread is larger than the mustard seed.

Prayers for a successful surgery and speedy recovery, from a going on 8 year colon cancer (stage 1) surviver. Your total health depends on digestive tract health. I felt for a long time you sounded like you had too many upper respiratory problems that would linger, not a good sign. Please take extra special care in the future, we need honesty, decency and a positive outlook that you give your viewers and listeners. Hope to see or hear you back really soon. God Bless you!!

To ALL: For the rest of us that also have occasional or regular ulcerative colitis, are the non-invasive colon scans as good at detecting colon cancer in time? I don't care for the invasive procedure, and I am hoping there is a better way. thanks, FLE

A couple of points- people with ulcerative colitis are at an increased risk for colon CA. The risk of developing colon CA starts to rise after about 10 years of active colitis; at 20 years there is about a 20% risk of cancer. Also, the cancers that arise from ulcerative colitis do not usually arise from polyps, but rather arise from relatively flat areas of previous dysplasia. Therefore, colitis patients undergo frequent colonoscopies for surveillence, along with random biopsies to detect dysplasia and cancer. Since the cancers in colitis patients do not typically arise from polyps, the "non-invasive" procedure ( I think you are referring to CT colonography) is probably not a good choice, since the CT colonography will not detect these flat lesions, and biopsies cannot be done. Even for "average-risk" people without colitis, the effectiveness of CT colonography has been questioned. There is a relatively high rate of missing small polyps. Also, it isn't as "non-invasive" as you might think; your colon still needs to be inflated with air via a rectal probe, which is uncomfortable (both the inflating and probing!). When it's time to screen my colon, I'm going for the colonoscopy.

Prayers for Mr. Snow

A routine colonoscopy for folks over 40 is a GOOD thing. It is done and over with under mild sedatives and any polyps can be removed.

Just had my second. Every 5 yrs is not a bad preventive measure.

WOW,

that's really good advice with just the kind of details a person who's had a colonoscopy before can understand.

THANK YOU
