Rap Mogul Speaks Out Against KFC

NEW YORK (AP) Hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons is joining other celebrities and activists in a call for boycotts against Kentucky Fried Chicken.

He called slaughter practices used by the fast-food chain’s suppliers “grossly inhumane” and has filmed a commercial “showing some of the very worst abuses chickens undergo” before they are served to customers, the Daily News reported Sunday.

Simmons, who is chairman of Def Jam Records said he has talked to officials of Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC, and said he will release the ad and start a boycott if the company does not reform its practices.

The chain has about 250 within the five boroughs.

“When a company targets our community, disrespects us as consumers and sells us products ridden with negative energy and laced with toxins, that is our business,” said Simmons.

Other celebrities and activists have also raised their voices against KFC including comedian Rev. Al Sharpton, Dick Gregory, Pamela Anderson and Paul McCartney.

Yum! Brands vice president Jonathan Blum disputed Simmons claim.

“We have an independent panel of outside experts who set our high standards,” said Blum. “They are the same standards that all our competitors use to insure human treatment around the country.”

Recently the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals recruited Simmons to promote a new toll-free hotline for New Yorkers to report abuse of animals.

In related news stories:

Hundreds of African American KFC employees laid off due to the continuing community protests.

Meanwhile, black on black crime skyrockets, no end in sight. What will the government do to solve the growing crisis?

Just what the country needs, another Jesse.

Not just KFC. Basically any chicken after you've seen what goes on in the plants. Think "The Jungle" (if anyone's read that book besides me).

People like you -- who always condemn someone for caring about something that isn't considerd a major problem to you.
And who says children aren't taking precedence? I guess you just don't want the 'small' things mentioned or solved?

"Why even bother replying if you're just going to type pure crap? Just to read your own comments?"

Actually, I was trying to point out how full of crap your post was. I'm sorry if I upset you, I can tell you're one of those sensitive types. Please don't eat chicken anymore, it may upset you further.

Paleeeeeeze you must be a PETA memeber, putting chickens before kids just isn't right and if this rapper's head was on right he'd be more worried bout kids instead of a stupid chicken, chickens are not the future of this country, kids are, period.

Again....who's putting chickens before people? And calling me dirty names is a liberal tactic to get out of a sticky situation you are obviously losing. You just hope someone else picks up on your totally off the wall accusation to help you out. Old game.

Have a nice day.

Underestimate him???

The guy is an idiot...do a google search on this malcontent; he wrote an open letter to President Bush against the Iraqi war stating "millions of people and young men in the inner city are living in poverty and are jobless"...now he's advocating a boycott of business in the inner city which employ residents of the inner city!!!! Duh!

...as we saw with cool rapper P-Diddy's "Vote or Die"....there will be no effect.

"Is KFC still as good?"

The biscuits are excellent, that I will say. Perfect to have with gravy.

Of all fast food I really only like Wendy's (the chili) and KFC.

Jesse Jackson isn't exactly brilliant either. :O

I have no idea what his effect will be on voters, but I expect to see alot more of him politically and to take up the mantle for activism.

Well how else does he expect them to get the secret herbs and spices to stick. Everyone knows that secret herbs and spices are positively CHARGED! It's kinda like electric powdercoating for food. Sheez, what a maroon!

Actually Mr. Simmons is perhaps one of the smartest "African-American" leaders. Most of these "leaders" play racial warlord, but Simmons has expanded his repetoire to include Jew/Black relations and now animal rights, proving he is not some one note hustler.

In music these days it is "here today, gone tomorrow", there are no more Led Zeppelin's in the world and this idiot is only as good as his next record sale.

Look at Michael Jackson- and I am not referring to his fall from grace with his perverted lifestyle rather how his record sales have plummeted and he is not the icon (in this country anyway) he was ten-fifteen years ago.

And again- he is advocating a boycott of businesses in the black community which, if successful, will put members of that community out of work....brilliant!

What's next?? Boycott Colt 45 Malt Liquer cause it exploits horses??
