Rap Mogul Speaks Out Against KFC

NEW YORK (AP) Hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons is joining other celebrities and activists in a call for boycotts against Kentucky Fried Chicken.

He called slaughter practices used by the fast-food chain’s suppliers “grossly inhumane” and has filmed a commercial “showing some of the very worst abuses chickens undergo” before they are served to customers, the Daily News reported Sunday.

Simmons, who is chairman of Def Jam Records said he has talked to officials of Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC, and said he will release the ad and start a boycott if the company does not reform its practices.

The chain has about 250 within the five boroughs.

“When a company targets our community, disrespects us as consumers and sells us products ridden with negative energy and laced with toxins, that is our business,” said Simmons.

Other celebrities and activists have also raised their voices against KFC including comedian Rev. Al Sharpton, Dick Gregory, Pamela Anderson and Paul McCartney.

Yum! Brands vice president Jonathan Blum disputed Simmons claim.

“We have an independent panel of outside experts who set our high standards,” said Blum. “They are the same standards that all our competitors use to insure human treatment around the country.”

Recently the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals recruited Simmons to promote a new toll-free hotline for New Yorkers to report abuse of animals.

I think he was involved in "rap the vote" which was a thing to get young people to vote for Kerry, which in my mind means getting people to support terrorism and communism.

"If you saw how the chickens were processed, you wouldn't eat there either."

Have you ever seen how violently they rip carrots out of the ground? If you had, you probably wouldn't eat carrots either. Maybe we need a law that keeps food producers from letting us know what it takes to get our food to our table.

There is no reason why they can't be humane to animals up until the second they die. Why is this so hard for them to do? Why be unnecessarily cruel?

Nice try with the strawman argument there. Why even bother replying if you're just going to type pure crap? Just to read your own comments?

You're right, and I'm sure 99% of us agree. But I think the hypocracy of these Al Sharpton types is more of an issue.

Unlike posters who were twisting my words, I couldn't care less how they treat chickens. I'm talking about the purely sanitary aspect of the chicken plants. I'd wager that many people that saw the process (not cruelty, sanitation) would refuse to eat at KFC.

While we are banning KFC, we ought to ban hip-hop rap crap while we're at it.

Why do people like you feel people can't try to solve more than one problem at the same time?

I'm thinkin' you'll probably be seeing it alot more. He's working toward being an impressive force for the lefties. I won't underestimate him.

I have been a life-long KFC addict, but I must admit the last time I ate it, it didn't taste too good. I'm definitely moving toward Popeyes.

I hate to argue with you, but Irish Coffee is the perfect food. It has ample amounts of the four most important food groups; Sugar, Fat, Caffine and Alcohol!

Wonder if Russell will be speaking out against Williams Chicken chain, where I buy most of my fried chicken. Oh wait, it's black owned. Nevermind.
