Detroit's population falls to lowest level since 1920

DETROIT (AP) — The number of Detroit residents has fallen below 900,000 for the first time since 1920, according to estimates released by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments.

The agency said Monday that its estimate of the city's population, as of Feb. 1, is 899,387. That's a 5.5-percent drop — or 51,883 people — since the 2000 U.S. Census, which showed the city had dropped below 1 million.

Detroit's population peaked at about 2 million in the early 1950s. Since 2000, when it had 951,270 residents, Detroit has lost the most people of any U.S. city with 100,000 or more residents.

"Clearly, that's sobering news," Howard Hughey, a spokesman for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, said of the SEMCOG estimate.

"A lot of this decline is economic flight and we're aggressively addressing the root of that flight," Hughey told the Detroit Free Press. "We will continue to add strategies to grow Detroit neighborhood by neighborhood."

Annual population estimates compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau usually count about 10,000 fewer residents than does SEMCOG. The annual Census Bureau estimates will be available in July.

These Super Bowls are a racket anyway. They are awarded by the NFL as concessions to cities that provide substantial public funding for these new stadiums. Hosting a Super Bowl in the first couple of years after a stadium is built helps justify the "public investment" in the stadium.

Jacksonville, for example, had no business hosting a Super Bowl. Every story I've heard from people who were down there indicates that it was probably the worst-organized Super Bowl they've ever seen.

Berry Gordy knew when to get Motown the hell out of there.

You are right, Houston hosting last year was payback for the new stadium for the Texans. But at least Houston has a night life.

During the oil embargo of 73, Texas, Florida and other southern states referred to them a "Black Plate" people. Michigan, Penn., and some other states had dark background license plates. There was a big migration south back then.

Cincinnati public schools spend almost twice as much per student than our suburban schools and they are rated academic emergency. Our suburban schools spend a lot less and are rated excellent. What ticks me off is that our suburban schools could achieve much more if they weren't shackled with these lowered standards, that the city schools can't even meet.

My wife used to teach in inner-city Cincinnati pub schools. Typical hole - teachers had to buy their own supplies and guard from theft by other teachers, she'd kick students out for fighting and weapons only to have the administration send them right back, parents who never had any interest in their kids would complain that she was teaching too hard when their darlings failed, no one would stay in the building past the final bell because of past attacks on teachers, etc.

Awesome, awe inspiring modern ruins. Nothing comes close, not the Bronx, not Oakland. There are auto factories that cover square miles that have been deserted since the 1950s. There are 20 story hotels in the middle of downtown, there are shopping malls, there are entire streets. Sadly, a lot of it is now being demolished as a safety measure. A train station as large as grand central that hasn't seen a train in 35 years. Canals, factories.

Perhaps the Soviet Union has something similar. It's like Chernobal without the radiation. Chernobal might be safer to visit, all things considered.

Built for 2 million, now with 1 million. That's 1 million missing people that there is "stuff" there for. It's just a very strange feeling.

My wife visited a friend in Detroit last year, they actually sell t shirts saying I survived my trip to Detroit with a picture of an assault rifle on them. If this is a part of you city's tourism campaign then you are in trouble.

Ah, just the place for next year's Super Bowl, a decaying, abandoned city tailor made for a post-Apocalpytic movie set.

They actually filmed the movie in Canada. Only because the city was to expensive.

They also filmed much of the movie in Dallas.

To view how far Detroit has fallen, you should visit an interesting web site (not mine) called "The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit", located here:
http://www.detroityes.com/home.htm

Navigation tip: just click on each photo to move to the next one. However, I found that, here and there, a few "dead links" exist. If you get dumped into one, just click your "back" button then "jump ahead" to the next ruin site.

Viewing the ruins, I was reminded of a short story by Stephen Vincent Benet (sp?) I read years and years ago titled "By The Waters Of Babylon"...

Cheers!
- John

I live 250 miles NW of Detriot in the see of red that sorounds the islands of blue that is the state of michigan.

Detriot will never regain its standing as a great city as long as it is continued to be run by Democrats. The people of Detroit deserve what they have. They blindly vote for the same party election after election and they continue to spiral into the crapper of history.

"these democrat run cities are the worst rat holes, with the worst schools, crime, drugs, etc."

Just so. Here in Cleveland we are being treated to a display of outrage by Herroner the mayor, "One-term" Jane Campbell, over looming job cuts at NASA/Glenn (used to be Lewis) Research. 700 jobs, she brays, while ignoring the fact that she herself has cut hundreds of fire and safety and police jobs in the city itself.

The only thing saving Cleveland is that even the criminals are too dispirited to get off their a&&es and go hurt somebody.
