DENVER (AP) - A University of Colorado professor who provoked a furor when he compared victims of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks to Nazis resigned as a department chairman Monday but will retain his teaching job, the university said.
In an essay written after the Sept. 11 attacks, Ward Churchill said the World Trade Center victims were "little Eichmanns," a reference to Adolf Eichmann, who organized Nazi plans to exterminate Europe's Jews. Churchill also spoke of the "gallant sacrifices" of the "combat teams" that struck America.
The essay attracted little attention until Churchill was invited recently to speak at Hamilton College, about 40 miles east of Syracuse, N.Y. Hundreds of relatives of Sept. 11 victims have protested the appearance. Hamilton College President Joan Hinde has said that "however repugnant one might find Mr. Churchill's remarks," the college was committed to his right of free speech and would not rescind its invitation.
Administrators have moved Churchill's appearance to a building that can seat 2,000, instead of the originally planned 300.
Churchill resigned as chairman of Colorado's Ethnic Studies Department, telling university officials in a letter that "the present political climate has rendered me a liability in terms of representing either my department, the college, or the university."
University officials welcomed the move.
"While Professor Churchill has the constitutional right to express his political views, his essay on 9/11 has outraged and appalled us and the general public," interim CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano said.

Gee, I wonder if Hamilton College would be equally committed to a speaker's "right of free speech" if the speaker in question were positioned on the right side of the political spectrum?
Freedom of Speach doesn't gurantee you won't have to pay for stupid remarks you make.
Ethnic
And in other news, concessionaires have stocked up on rotten apples and tomatoes!
..."the present political climate has rendered me a liability..."
Hooo boy, hey, not my fault. It's the "present political climate" that is responsible for this.
And in other news, the New York City Fire Department and the New York City Police Department have bought up the first 10 rows for the performance.
This just in: Concessionaires are expected to run short of supplies!
"Joan Hinde" is a contemptible moral dwarf, hiding behind "free speech" to excuse the inexcusable. This is not in the slightest degree a free speech issue.
Hamilton College is not obliged to provide a platform for vile haters to spew lies. Mr. Churchill's free speech rights would not be infringed one iota if Hamilton College grew some balls.
Let Mr. Churchill give his talk at ground zero, to an assembly of New York's Finest. Let's see what kind of reception he gets there.
good.
that's a start.
the football coach, gary barnett, should resign.
and the university president, also target corp. board of directors, betsy hoffman who calls herself a c---.
DENVER A seventh charge of rape has been made against the University of Colorado football team, this time by their female placekicker, Kelly Hnida. Coach Gary Barnett tried to deflect the charge by saying that Kelly was an "awful" player who couldn't "kick the ball through the uprights." "Kelly was not only a girl, she was terrible," he added, helpfully.
Excellent news. Guy sounds like he belongs in a booby hatch for commies.
"the present political climate has rendered me a liability"
No, what you wrote and profess to believe has rendered you a liability. Typical leftist, blaming everyone else for what is obviously his own responsibility.
This is kind of like Mohammed Atta getting sent back to coach.
He seems to be becoming a man without a country - or people...even as a Native American
Amen brother.
"Hamilton College President Joan Hinde has said that "however repugnant one might find Mr. Churchill's remarks," the college was committed to his right of free speech and would not rescind its invitation."
I think this would be the perfect occasion to hold an anti-gay marriage rally - right outside from where this person is to speak. Let's see how Joan Hinde reacts to that!
Three thousand people chosen by Fate met their deaths on September 11th, 2001. It takes incredible intellectual arrogance to call all of them "little Eichmanns".
"Seppuku requires a sense of duty and honor."
But can also be ordered by a court in lieu of the death penalty.
