When Sen. Hillary Clinton runs for reelection in 2006, her opponent might just be another high-profile attorney from Westchester.Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Pirro is considering challenging the former First Lady, according to political insiders.
The GOP crimefighter, who is running for reelection this year, is not publicly discussing plans for higher office.
But Pirro has a dizzying fund-raising schedule and the enthusiastic backing of Gov. Pataki. "We love Jeanine," said a source in Pataki's camp.
Sources say it is becoming less likely by the day that former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who may be eying the White House, will challenge Clinton for the Senate seat.
A Clinton-Pirro contest has the makings of a marquee matchup between two controversial and ambitious women.
"This wouldn't be just a battle," longtime Pirro friend and Westchester radio station owner Bill O'Shaughnessy told the Daily News. "It would be a catfight, and my money would be on Jeanine."
"There'll be more interest in this than in 'Desperate Housewives,'" he added.
Never one to shy from the limelight, Pirro has an active schedule planned.
Last night, Mayor Bloomberg hosted a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser for Pirro at his upper East Side digs. On Feb 10, she will stage a $250-a-head soiree headlined by radio and TV personality Sean Hannity. And this weekend, Pirro is booked to speak to influential Conservative Party operatives.
That party's leader, Mike Long, said Pirro's crime-fighting pedigree makes her an attractive candidate to his group, even though she is pro-choice. "I certainly think Jeanine could go toe-to-toe with the senator," said Long.
Pirro carries the baggage of husband Al Pirro's 2000 conviction on federal tax evasion charges, which included allegations he fudged the couple's joint returns to support their lavish lifestyle.
But O'Shaughnessy insisted she could get around that issue. "You cannot hold the omissions of the husband against the wife who has her own career," he said.
Pirro's spokeswoman, Ann Marie Corbalis, insisted her boss plans to remain district attorney "as long as the people of Westchester want her."
But Westchester GOP consultant Mike Edelman said Pirro is "taking a good hard look" at the 2006 state attorney general race, and a challenge against Clinton.

Don't be suprised folks.......The Republicans are becoming the big tent...they will accept her...after alll...who has the FBI Files...still to this day?
Yeah, but Larry kept telling us indictments were coming and the whole Clinton house would fall. We're still waiting. The guy's predictions never pan out.
Hillary grew up in a Republican household and was radicalized leftward while attending college like so many others in our country.
Hillary running as a Republican... man would that drive folks like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity absolutely crazy!!! ;)
"The Republicans are becoming the big tent"
The choice is clear. Big tent or no tent.
Rudy and Jeanine Pirro don't want to be Senator. If they did, they'd have run against Schumer. They didn't. There wasn't even any talk. Now we're supposed to believe they're jumping at the chance to take on the smartest woman in the world and her MSM attack machine?
Forget the star power route and find a very solid candidate to go against her. Someone who won't make a debate gaffe and make it easier for the MSM to crown Hellary as the winner, something they did anyway, Lazio's stunt notwithstanding. Find someone whose campaign can work around the vaunted NYC press that all folded in 2000, someone who can appeal to upstate and make sure those western NY voters who went to Hellary don't do so again. And finally, put in place a system to make sure there is no voter fraud in NYC that some allege went on in 2000. Fraud that wasn't followed up on because the margin elsewhere obscured it.
Only don't try to tell us that the easier of the two NY Senators got a free pass back to Washington, but the stops will be pulled out for Hellary. Knocking off Schumer would have been a shot across her bow that the state is following the rest of the nation. Instead, it's a white flag that says she'll be unopposed when the stars decline.
Larry Nichols is a fool.
O-tay, 'Panky!!
Of course she will run as a Democrat, but she wants to run as a moderate Democrat.
Young Hillary was mentored by a radical Methodist minister, Donald Jones, and eagerly embraced the principles of Saul Alinsky at the very first opportunity.
She initially professed suitably Republican values in order to placate her arch-conservative, taskmaster of a father, and to get along in the conservative, Republican-leaning, Chicago suburb in which she was raised.
In terms of political ideology, she is not-by any stretch of the imagination-a "Daddy's girl."

Hillary will do anything to get elected. Whatever it takes. She is already repositioning her 'policy stands'.
That was the void in Kerry's campaign; he stood on every side of every issue.
Hillary, at least, is taking a stand on some of the major ones. And her position will always be on whichever side has the most potential votes. Any divergence from her hubby's admin will be excused as 'his', not 'her', position.
Re Pirro...no way she makes the race. There is sooo much dirt on her husband..the family situation...it was pretty lcoal here, the trial..statewide, against Hillary, it'd be blown up a thousand times more..the campaign would be over in two weeks..

According to Larry Nichols.....AS stated on What's Right , What's left..........Hillary Clinton is going to run in 2008.......as a REPUBLICAN
She wouldn't win the nomination if she did. I don't think she will do this. Not worried about it though, cause she will lose if she does it.

-good times, G.J.P.(Jr.)
There were indicments but they were never followed through.
Those pesky FBI files seemed to change a lot of REPUBLICAN minds.
Nonsense.
One must stand up for what one believes.
If we all had that thought...then there would be abortion on demand...homosexuality taught in our schools......latchkey children.....no prayers allowed anywhere....open borders......
OOOOPS....it looks as if we have the big tent.
Sorry...I didn't know BILL & Hillary were posters on this forum.
