The first family attended church this morning. Afterwards, the President headed to Camp David where he was to meet with his advisors to work on his State of the Union Address.

Yes, sorry I haven't answered sooner. Been trying to catch up on some housework after having the flu for a second time and a furnace that had to be replaced during a zero degree cold spell.

Thanks for your input. I hear from the Michael Crawford fans who are nothing if not avid, and will never accept anyone in the role which he created. Crawford was known as an incredible actor, but it was Andrew Lloyd Webber who discovered his beautiful singing voice and made him famous. So I feel that Webber owed Crawford nothing and had the right to cast his movie with a younger actor to attract the younger fans. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie.

***Question about the yorkshire pudding recipe: most of the recipes I've seen in books mention using drippings from the roast instead of the oil. I take it that the pudding comes out all right without the drippings, so I guess that's just for flavor? ***

May I answer this from an American viewpoint? My recipe also calls for using drippings from the roast to line the pudding pan. But those precious drippings go into the gravy instead. The way meat is cut in this country today there isn't much suet left on the roast. In fact, I have to make sure to shop at a meat market that will still even HAVE suet to add to the roast since I prefer a ribeye roast and they come really pared down without fat. Pouring the delicious gravy on the pudding does the trick. I guess it might be a matter of regional ways of cooking.

I wouldn't call myself a Michael Crawford "fan" but I thought he did really well in the role.

This young actor was exceptionally good dramatically, I thought, and though his voice was different....richer..... in quality (and as I said, had a few minor pitch problems that bothered me), he made a believeable Phantom (and I can speak from personal experience with my daughter's friends.......he IS drawing a younger audience!)

Oh I think you're 100% right. I just found that on a conversion site and also felt that was way too hot so was hoping someone would give an alternative temp.

Oh, no problem, snugs. I just looked up the conversion, but as kitkat pointed out our conversion is probably too hot, so we're taking it down to 425.

Dripping was the traditional fat used for Yorkshire Pudding and in Yorkshire still is. In the south of England where I come from most people use oil though some do use dripping from the meat or dripping from the butchers however with modern cuts of meat having not a lot of fat you can struggle to get enough dripping especially if you like to use meat juices for the gravy hence why vegetable oil is used. Dripping from the butchers is just the white fat without meat juices so for my taste is too fatty tasting and I prefer the oil. What I sometimes do though is to take the individual Yorkshire out of the bun tin and either put it round the joint in the roasting tin to soak up a little of the juice or just quickly dip it in the juice to get the flavour but not waste the juice.

Cucumber sandwiches traditionally are made with white bread cut very thin normally a sandwich or tin loaf we call them in the UK or a medium sliced loaf. Cut the crusts off and butter with real butter not low fat spread or margarine.

The cucumber should be peeled and sliced so thin that it is transparent. Mix with salt, pepper and malt vinegar, it must be malt vinegar not cider or wine vinegar the type of vinegar us Brits put on our chips (fries). Put cucumber into the the bread make sure not too wet or bread will go soggy cut into 4 triangles serve with a cup of tea with either cakes or sconces and cream to follow and you have a traditional English high tea. Instead of cucumber sandwiches another tradition is tinned red salmon sandwiches.
