OK, so some unnamed bureaucrats insinuate that the US would nuke Mecca if alQaeda struck again. Not exactly an iron-clad nuclear policy. This sounds like rumor and speculation. Most likely wishful thinking.

This is really a very unfortunate rumor. Here we are enguaged in a war trying to enlist the help of the average Iraqi on the street, and here some well meaning (or NOT) dufus is lofting a hypothetical that sees us destroying the most sacred shrine known to those very Iraqi folks on the street.

This is what one might call a wedge issue. It couldn't be designed better to separate us from potential allies, if it were designed by Laden himself.

Paradoxically, I'm sure Ben Laden would just love Mecca to be nuked by a US nuke. Fabulous PR for him to whip Muslims throughout the world into a frenzy.

Nuclear weapons used in the time of war is geopolitical poison. It is a one-way ticket to becoming an instant international pariah. The "horrors" of a nuclear strike have become so mythical that the next nation to use one in the time of war (or peace), especially in a non-combat theatre (like Mecca) will face SERIOUS repercussions in the international domain. Geopolitical clout would dwindle to zero.

To even entertain such an idea is foolish. To put these foolish thoughts into the mouth of our president is treasonous. Cut the crap.

What is funnier is the wnd poll which asks opinion on the mecca nuke thing. WND is conservative, but in my opinion, not a radical site. The #1 answer was that not only should we nuke mecca, but lace the bomb with pigs blood.
