Power Line Named Blog of the Year: TIME also names Power Line its Blog of the Year. Before this year, blogs were a curiosity, a cult phenomenon, a faintly embarrassing hobby on the order of ham radio and stamp collecting. But in 2004, blogs unexpectedly vaulted into the pantheon of major media, alongside TV, radio and, yes, magazines, and it was Power Line, more than any other blog, that got them there, writes TIMEs Lev Grossman.

Hams were handling health and welfare traffic from SE Asia almost before the water had receded.
(I'm a licensed amateur too. So are my husband and daughter.)
That's embarrassing!
WOW a totally uncalled for slam on ham radios by Time magazine.
I like Blogs because the world must know why DrWho is WAY better than Star Trek.
Breaker 19! We got a bear in the air behind the charteuse microbus. Catcha on the rebound, come on.
I am neither a ham radio operator nor a stamp collector, but the only source of "embarrassment" at either hobby would have to be an insecurity-driven adolescent obesession with appearing "cool" to other adolescents. TIME needs to hire some grown-ups.
I'm a licensed Ham Radio Operator, as are my father, mother and brother. The hobby for me is not an embarrassing hobby, it's actually a lot of fun. Highlights for me especially include, sending and receiving health and welfare traffic for loved ones and those serving overseas in the military, and serving as Disaster and Emergency Coordinator for the county.
For a 'mag' that is found up front in the supermarkets along with The Enquirer and the Globe - they have a lot of room to talk ...
Another blue state "reporter" taking aim at someting he/she knows nothing about except that its "nerdy"
73....K5MEW (Since 1957)
Many Ham Radio operators (myself included) are also shortwave radio geeks, and many of the shortwave radio geeks came into the hobby of Ham Radio itself because of shortwave radio.
heh, heh, heh - 3's & 8's to ya!
nada ...
Meanwhile, this is the best writing about the 2004 Florida hurricanes that a friend of mine tripped across.
Beware...it's around a 2.4 MB download, but well worth it...if you're into such things.
And B5 is better than both, BTW Battle star Glactica starts on the SCIFI Channel in Jan.
You say that on ham radio frequencies, you get triangulated. :)
Same here, I guess now having streaming audio from the Internet does tend to take the "sport" out of listening to foreign broadcasters nowadays. But I still have my Radio Shack DX-370 handy, and every once in awhile when I have a little free time, I will do a little scanning to see what's out there.
I'm an "extra", myself
Ham Radio is an embarrassing hobby???
Tell that to rescue workers in every part of the planet who are damned glad that Amateur Radio Operators provide communications when cell phones and land lines cease working.
No, these days, working for the mainstream media is the embarrassment and this article from Time only adds to the heap of stupid media content.
well spank this guy with a spoon. I have great apprcation for ham operators. If it wasn't for them and the MARS, we wouldn't have been able to "call" home, when we pulled into port, years ago when I was on the boats!
