Mom ousted for taping gay acceptance `lies' (Forced off property at High School Gay Awareness Day)
The Boston Herald ^ | Thursday, December 16, 2004 | Jessica Fargen

Posted on 12/16/2004 10:05:07 AM PST by presidio9

Two parents, shocked at frank talk during a gay and lesbian awareness day at Newton North High, were forced off the property after one parent whipped out a video camera and started taping.

``This does not belong in curriculum,'' said Kim Cariani, who said four police officers and the principal told them they would be charged with trespassing if they did not leave.

``It's against my religion. It's morally wrong and forced in a child's face.''

Each year, some students at Newton North forgo classes during To BGLAD: Transgender, Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Awareness Day with assembly-like sessions including ``Out at the Old Ballgame'' and ``Color Me Queer.'' Students are not required to attend.

Cariani kept her two kids home during the day, but she was curious.

Cariani and another parent, Brian Camenker, were in the audience when adults in a panel discussion talked about being gay. When one man told the students he was attracted to his sister's husband, Cariani said she started to record the ``propaganda, false information and lies.''

The principal demanded Cariani turn over the videotape or leave, Camenker said.

``They took the two of us and pulled us out and gave us one minute to leave and if we came back on the property we would be arrested for trespassing,'' he said.

Tom Mountain, a columnist for the Newton Tab, was also barred from the assembly ``for the safety and security of the children,'' he said he was told.

Newton schools Superintendent Jeff Young said it is a violation of school policy to tape or photograph students without parental permission. Cariani refused to give up the tape, so they were asked to decamp, he said.

The awareness day, held for the past 10 years, is one of several ways the schools highlight diversity, Young said. Students who don't want to go can go to the library or computer lab.

I don't know the answer to these questions, and the article doesn't help. This woman seemed to know about this event, so it's safe to assume that other parents had access to the same information.

Neither of us really knows the answer to the question, but the fact that the administration did not want her taping the event would suggest that they are trying to hide something. Particualarly if you beleive Massgopguy's assertion that others, favorable to the program, were allowed to tape it.

The argument of video taping the children without their consent is a straw-man argument.....

Tell that to the Dad's taping every football and basketball game that they cannot film it...won't happen....same issue, school property and students...

The real issue was that the material was controversial and the school principal and administration didn't not want the "light of day" shown on it.

Homosexuality is a perversion not a choice. The more acceptable and mainstream the radical gay population is able to make it the more members swell their ranks (no pun intended).

No separation between State and homosexuality, I guess.

Are you kidding me? Middle schoolers were actually "taught" this? I would be outraged if my kids were ever exposed to that.

..."for the safety and security of the children,''...

I don't have to tell most of you on this forum that we, as a people and as a nation, are in deep trouble!

The homosexuals want to get their hands on our children while our school "administrators" and many teachers ,as enablers, do everything they can to facilitate this end.

Hats off to brave people who dare face up to this challenge of "getting in the face" of these bureaucratic weasels.

I just graduated with my masters in education from a supposedly "conservative" university. They teach masters students that they are to be above the fray of the lowly ignorant parents, because they know best. It would make you vomit what they are teaching in schools of education today.

I am really disgusted with your ongoing support of the homosexual promoters' attempts to indoctrinate and recruit kids into the "gay" life.

Quite a charge to make, especially considering the lack of substantiation for your claim.

I said it before, and I'll keep on saying it; the more pissed off parents get around the country at this crap, the better.

I don't know. I wasn't in attendance

And neither were other many parents who would be interested in what is going on at the school. If the children of the school are being taught something, why is it wrong to allow others to knwo what is going on? It's not as if this was a private meeting, it was a public meeting. All students could attend, so why can't parents? And if parents can attend, why can't they videotape the meeting?

Sorry, as a taxpayer and parent she should have the right to attend and record any meeting that is open to any and all children at the school, as this meeting was advertised.

I'm curious as to how the people running this event could have known she was opposed to the program?

I really liked the idea of the public school (as we older folks remember it) and am troubled by the "fragmenting" of society. Kids learning in such different environments will have totally opposing views of the world. That can't be good for society, IMHO.

But who caused the problem? The nutjobs putting all this idiocy in the schools. I wouldn't abuse my children by putting them through the left's idea of "progressive education."

Well, I certainly don't know that this program was an indoctrination or recruitment thing. The fact that parents could attend it tends to argue against that. Had I been a parent of a kid at that school, I probably would have attended the program, too, but I would have stayed through the whole thing, taking notes.

If it went beyond the line, then I'd have made my unhappiness heard, with the support of my notes. Again, I don't know what was presented in the sessions, other than the titles of the sessions.

I guess I just insist on more information before I condemn such programs.

There was a similar event for gay high schoolers at Tutfts University and a concerned citizen taped it and reulted in state employees being fired for unauthorized conduct where said employee sued the taper.
