I don't completely buy the "Betamax was superior" line for two reasons. The first and most obvious one to VCR users was that Betamax didn't hold as much as VHS, thus making VHS superior in a fairly important way, especially when tapes cost $20 and the best VHS recording speed was 2 hours. But even if you just look at quality, the Betamax machine moves the tape, in a serpentine way, past the heads (in a sort of "B" shape without the back bar, thus the name). The problem with that is tape wear. If you've ever seen old Betamax tapes, they'd get sparkly drop-outs where the magnetic material flaked off of the tape because of how it was being wound through the heads. So perhaps with a pristine tape and a short program, Betamax was superior but people wanted longer recording times and there were certainly some quality issues, at least with the tapes of that day, in the long haul.

Having had a spouse and two friends work for MacWarehouse, let's just say that we buy our Mac stuff from just about any other vendor...

If you want a desktop and want something cheap, take a look at the eMac or new iMac (if you want a G5 64-bit processor and a small desktop footprint). But I really suggest you take a look at the iBook, even if you don't currently have a laptop. It's a rock-solid laptop that's competatively priced with similarly equipped PC laptops (and quite possibly a better deal than most). The new iBooks have a G4 processor and 32MB of video RAM which would hold you over. It also has one of the best wireless networking antennas around built in (you can add wireless networking as an option). The Apple Safari browser also does a good job of blocking pop-ups and other annoying web tricks but they also include a copy of Internet Explorer for the Mac if you really need it for something. They also give you a great email client that has features for tagging spam and such.

If you need Microsoft Office for any reason and decide to buy a Mac, see if you can find a place that will offer you a special deal on Office for the Mac (the high-end version also includes a Windows emulator so that you can run Windows software, in an emulator window, on your Mac). Office works really well on the Mac and I've only noticed one minor and obscure incompatability with the Windows version (having to do with how Windows and Macs handle end-of-line characters). Despite my dislike of Microsoft's operating system, Office is worth having if you do a lot of word processing or work with spreadsheets. If you don't, Apple's AppleWorks includes word processing and spreadsheet functionality.

You are correct about the tape handling aspect. Matsushita got the transport right. However, the image processing electronics for Beta were superior, producing an image resolution of about 300 lines vs VHS 240 IIRC.

Interestingly enough, every format Panasonic has produced in the last 10 years has been half-inch, since they already have a solid mechanism for it. Why mess with success?

Higher resolution was what LDs were for. I think most of the LD players were running in the 400-425 line range and produced output so bright that I saw my old one cause VCRs and TVs to "gray out" on screens that were totally white because they couldn't handle the brightness. And because I actually had an LD player in the 1980s, I have a copy of the first Star Wars trilogy, in crisp widescreen LD format, without all of the "improvements" on the DVD courtesy of George Lucas.

As a I wrote, why would someone waste the time to create a virus that will onlyattack 6 machines out of every 500 computers. That's a potential infected base of over 10 million systems -- systems often directly marketed to the first timer, "I know nothing of computers or security" crowd. Why pass up that?

After two years with my trusty, no freezes, no worms, no viruses, no problem iMAC G4, I have done the download and am happy as a clam in hot sauce. And it plays the great music of the world while I read FR on the big 17 incher too! My most sincere condolences to PC owners, but it's Christmas and one should be benevolent. My cousins with PCs are included in this wish, but they are so busy, they tell me, curing PC glitches they hardy have time to enjoy the Season.

Apache can run on just about any OS: Mac X/Linux/Unix, Novell Netware, Microsoft Windows, and some EBCDIC machines

In my experience, most production Apache installs are for Linux or other 'nix variants, with Windows very low on the list.

I happen to value the same things, and my amchine is just fine. The only reason I made the remarks I did today was I mentioned on another thread that I have a PC and boy the it was a Big Mac Attack, and I shouldn't leave out the Linux users too. :-)

Both systems are fine, and both have their a good points and bad points.

The reason the Beta was considered better wass due to the tape speed being faster moving across the recording head. But your point about the tape flaking is right on target.

I think both have a recording wigth of 32 microns and the record angle is the same, it is just the spped of the tape passing over the head that was different and that limited the Beta to 5 hours max.
