Grandsons camp out at house to catch burglar

Two brothers were determined to stop someone from breaking into their grandfather's Washington County home for the third time in less than a week, so they armed themselves with rifles and camped out, police said.

Sure enough, Brian and Bob Reihner came face-to-face with an armed man breaking into their grandfather's North Franklin Township home early yesterday, township police Chief Mark Kavakich said.

The confrontation ended with the arrest of Steven A. Wallace, 19, of Washington, police said.

"This is how kids should take care of their grandparents," Kavakich said. "They stepped up and may have saved their grandfather's life."

The Reihners decided to stay with their grandfather, Daniel Denman, after two men confronted Denman in his home over the weekend and someone again robbed the house on Tuesday. The people stole cash, a compact disc player and rolls of quarters.

A doctor friend of mine and I did some testing out at his ranch. I setup a human silhouette target and then we backed off and he gave it a round of .12 gauge defense load (00 buck). He had a funny look on his face, and then explained to me how if that had been a person, they would have been disabled (hip shot out) and then died in about a minute (apparently the pattern had removed a couple a major arteries). They should have pulled the triggers, then there might be one less petty criminal that the taxpayers have to take care of. Damn shame.

Brian Reihner discounts any notion that he and his brother, Bob, are heroes. But North Franklin Township police Chief Mark Kavakich credits them for possibly saving their grandfather's life during a home invasion early Thursday.

Steven A. Wallace, 19, of 930 W. Chestnut St., Washington, was arrested shortly after he allegedly forced his way into the Sylvan Drive home of Daniel Denman, only to be confronted by the Reihners. Police said he broke into the house about 2:30 a.m. by forcing in plywood covering a door damaged in a previous break-in.

"We were just catnapping," Brian Reihner said, recalling the events of early Thursday. "I could hear him come in. I just waited until he came around the corner. Then my brother turned on the light."

This young lad has just too many good manners. He should have shot him when he assaulted his brother. Not doing so probably put all their lives in danger. Besides, this criminal is probably already out on bail.
