MILFORD — Devlin Mannle, 18, simply wanted to donate blood as part of Jonathan Law High School’s holiday blood drive last week.
The American Red Cross worker began asking Mannle a series of questions.
Had he been exposed to hepatitis? Malaria? Had he recently visited certain countries in Africa? Is he an intravenous drug user?
Mannle’s answer to each query was "No."
Then the worker asked another question.
"Have you had sex with a man?"
"Yes," Mannle answered.

Hey now...we're talking about medicinal use of blood, not recreational...
What happens when one or two pints slip through, and the unknowning recipient contacts HIV.
I donate all the time, they ask thesequestions, along with sleeping with prostitutes, sharing needles or going to Africa about 4 times each through the interview.
The nations health should supercede some 18 year old gay's feelings. But we all know it won't.
Offer to donate some blood to this young man and any of the protestors. I wonder how many of them would do the right thing and have it reserved for them.
First they run around infecting each other with AIDS, then they complain that not enough is being done to stop the AIDS virus, then the complain when their blood is not wanted. Throughout all, they complain that they are not welcomed and embraced by mainstream society as they attempt to obtain (through the "back door" of rogue courts) a special, priviledged status in society. Very charismatic people.

Since there are at least twenty times as many heterosexual women in Connecticut than there are gay men, this is not altogether surprising. It is the rate of infection that is important. Shawn Lang is a supposed expert in the field and is either as dumb as a rock, dishonest, or both.
When I'm bleeding on a gurney, and I need a unit of blood, I don't much care if the person donating was offended, but I care deeply if the blood is infected with HIV. People just need to grow up and realize that it is not always about them.
It might also be nice if they realized that some sexual behaviors are a lot more risky than others, in spite of what the PC police would have you believe.
Yup. I'm banned for life from donating and my kids are each banned for 30 years. They have to protect the blood supply no matter what. It would sure suck to have some kid with hepatitis contract AIDS (or Mad Cow) because people are afraid of offending A Group.
OK, here is an idea: We accept blood from gays, then send all that blood to San Francisco, Marin County and other designated 'areas of enlightenment'. We then use that blood only on Gays and people who voted for John Kerry.
This article is a hoax. I've donated blood many times. The workers give you a questionnaire to fill out in a private cubicle. They don't ask these questions to your face.
The donor is also given every opportunity to secretly label his own blood sample.
Hey! My husband was stationed in Germany around 1983 or 1984 and he was recently told that he is permanently barred from giving blood because of the possibility of mad cow disease. Maybe you and him ought to get together and protest!

Is there a higher percentage of women than homosexual men with HIV? I don't believe this is true.
In sheer numbers - are there are more women (women make up approximately 50% of the population) than homosexual men (about 1-2% of the total population) with HIV? Quite possibly.

Same here. I have donated over a gallon in my lifetime, but four years ago was informed that since I lived in Western europe 1982 - 1986, no more donations from me.
The FDA is absolutely correct on this.
In fact, I'd go further. . .anyone who knows they have AIDS who attempts to give blood would be charged with attempted murder.
This is an outrage! Gay men are only 400 times more likely to carry the AIDS virus!

In my experience, they ask you all the sex, drugs & traveling to Africa questions on a private questionnaire, and then follow up with a confidential interview. If your iron is low or your temperature high or you checked a "yes" that should have been a "no", you are privately declined for donation. No branding, no red X on the forehead. Just, "I'm sorry, we cannot use your blood at this time"...
If somebody wants to lie to the questionnaire and lie to the interviewer, they are given one last opportunity to do the right thing. You are given two bar code stickers, one to put on your form if you think your blood is safe for transfusion and one if you have any reason to think there may be a risk. The interviewer hands you the stickers and turns away, so you can place the appropriate sticker on the form and throw the other one away. The blood bank even says that if you use the "DO NOT TRANSFUSE" sticker, your blood will be used for other purposes, such as research.
Now if anybody can go through that whole process, read the questions and go have the interview, and then use the "TRANSFUSE MY BLOOD" sticker even though they know they were lying, we are dealing with a level of narcissism that I have a hard time believing actually exists. Maybe I just run with the wrong (right) crowd...
