A female teacher who allegedly "married" a 14-year-old girl in a pagan ritual faces criminal-sexual conduct charges in Michigan.

Elizabeth Miklosovic, 36, of Grand Rapids faces a possible life sentence for her conduct with a former student at Baseline Middle School in South Haven, Mich., the Muskegon Chronicle reported.

"They also participated in witchcraft together," Detective Sgt. Dianne Oppenheim told the Michigan paper.

The Kent County Prosecutor's office issued warrants Thursday on first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct charges, alleging Miklosovic, a seventh-grade language-arts teacher, was involved in illegal sex acts with the student at the teacher's Grand Rapids home.

The girl's family initially believed Miklosovic was trying to help the girl, described as emotionally troubled, the Chronicle said.

But the girl's uncle, outraged, says the teacher "brainwashed" her into thinking their actions were OK.

"It's heartbreaking to know [you put] your trust, your faith in a teacher, and this is how it goes," the uncle said. "[The girl] doesn't think a crime's been committed. She's plainly been brainwashed by her teacher."

The girl told police of five sexual encounters from June to October, the Muskegon paper said.

Miklosovic has a "nontraditional family," a neighbor told the paper, living with another woman and their adopted son.

Local residents expressed their anger to the Chronicle.

"If you can't trust your kid's teacher, who can you trust?" asked Monica Thompson, 24. "It appalled me. I heard about it on the news last night. A kid and a grown woman?"

A recent graduate of local South Haven High School, Mallory Spencer, told the Chronicle, "It's getting kind of scary now. I have a lot of friends who teach there. ... I'm kind of numb. You hear about so much these days, nothing surprises me."

The Chronicle said Miklosovic, who has worked for the district three years, was highly regarded by staff and students and had no previous criminal record in Michigan.

Yes, call me old fashioned, but I never believed that women should be ministers. There is something very queer and almost pagan in seeing a woman with a Roman collar. Also like homosexuals in the army - a special interest group like women always brings a little special agenda to whatever needs to be done.

Why are teachers who prey on young children treated as isolated incidents, yet the same problem with the priesthood was treated as systemic?

One non-rhtorical answer might be,
" Because Church authorities, WHEN INFORMED, simply moved the offender to a different assignment, not telling the new parish/diocese of the probelm...again, and again, and again?"

IOW, in the one case, it was official concealment; in the other, when acts come to light, the offender is officially removed and prosecuted.

The thing that disturbs me is that we seem to be seeing more of these teachers preying on student cases around the country. Most of them seem to involve women teachers and young boys or girls. What is going on here?
Example, that really beautiful teacher in Florida having an affair with that 14 year old kid. She's in her 20's and married to a pretty good looking guy so why would she be interested in a 14 year old??

Yeah. I know what you're saying. I guess I wouldn't have a problem with it if the woman was upholding the cannons. BUT the problem with being reasonable about everything is that eventually you have no standards, no teachings and you've finally floudered on so many tangents you don't have a church at all. Church is not the place for personal agendas.

I don't follow the latest deviations in churches. I'm still watching the apples spoil from the inside out over gay marriage.

I wonder. We see some prosecution, but then, we've seen prosecution of priests, too. I wonder how much is covered up in the schools.

Back in the 60s, when I was in high school, there was a photographer who had a little shop next to the theater where lots of people hung out on Fri and Sat nights.

In Boston the media has taken the double-standard to the next level by criticizing the Church on a daily basis for closing schools and parishes as a result of the financial damages awarded against the Church.

I think every woman had a lesbian gym teacher in high school. The female gym teacher in my school was certainly rumored to be one.

I've read the standards or requirements for those entering the teaching profession from the late 1800s - early 1900s. There were more concerns about personal moral character than there were about academic qualifications. I wish I had the lists to post.

Not that the academic standards weren't there, but the high moral character required was considered just as important. People understood that children need protection from degrading and polluting influences, and a person with poor moral behavior is not a good example and will influence children.

Children are like delicate plants - a plant bent when the stem is tender may never grow straight.
