Students protest Army Recruiting Station, they recruit kids with "little access to opportunities.”

Four University of Wisconsin students were arrested and charged with unlawful trespassing Thursday following a sit-in protest at the U.S. Army Military Recruitment Station in University Square.

The anti-war protest, which drew between 35 and 50 protesters outside the office, sought to bring attention to current recruitment practices and how they “focus on people who have little access to opportunities,” according to UW sophomore and protest participant Joel Feingold.

Associated Students of Madison Academic Affairs Chair Ashok Kumar, one of the four arrested, said he and the other protesters walked in and demanded the office be turned into a financial aid office, symbolizing students who have to join the army to pay for college.

“We said we don’t believe people would have to kill themselves to get an education, [which] is a born right,” Kumar said, adding about 45 minutes passed before the police arrived and arrested them.

Its not the people joining the military doing the protesting-- its the people who are already in college and have it paid for.

What's messed up is that these kids are infringing on other kids right to join the service. There are PLENTY of opportunities to get college paid for in other ways. People in the service want to be there for some reason or another-- its not like one day you just wake up and you're on Parris Island.

Once you get to boot, you have to want to finish or you won't make it. We had people quit during the 5th, 6th, 7th weeks of training, they just said "Sir, this recruit doesn't want to be here anymore." The Senior DI counsels them, but if they're shitbirds they ride a bus home-- just where I want them.

The bottom 15% of my class that graduated shouldn't have.

The military is one of the fully functioning institutions in American society and the only one that is fully racially integrated. When my son graduated for OCS at Bennings, his class was a fully integrated body. Even had a nephew of a (black) congressman.

As long as we have liberal colleges and liberal professors and people in general that have no, how should I say, balanced picture of why we need a military to protect us based on our constitution, we will always see this stuff.
Sad. Often these type folks really are kind hearted and just cannot stomach the idea that there are really bad people in this world, that oppress others, and often the end result is the need to have a war when all diplomatic channels are exhusted. But regardless of the educational level, it appears many just do not seem to realize we must maintain a powerful and professional military. Their brain dead when it comes to this little fact of neccessity.
Then in todays world we have so many really bright kids that sign up to serve. Heck my nephew joined the Marines and he could have gone to any college he wanted to. But he wanted to serve our country. Of course I realize he also just wanted to join the Marine Corps. But no one dragged him into the recruiters office!
These kids that scream and whine should be gratefull we no longer have a draft.........hup one two, get your stupid ass off the ground scum ball........yea you, you stupid looking freak.
Then after boot camp the moms and dads weep as they see their son or daughters proudly march close drill on the parade ground during graduation, deciplined young men and women with a pretty solid bearing as what they are expected to do, and how to do it. Meanwhile, those winnies, well just hope they do not become congressional liberal leaders some day! As the record turns and turns.....

We are both enlisting in the Air Force because we want to. Neither of us are "well off" but we have other choices and opportunities if we did not want to join.

Congratulations!

Being in the Air Force myself, I may actually see you two after you've finished basic training and technical school.

If you're ever sent to either Osan Air Base, South Korea or Ft. Meade, Maryland, let me know. (Send me a message if you want my email.)

Entering the military presents one with huge opportunities.

Unlike these little brats, my husband did not have parents who paid for his college. He enlisted and, in addition to becoming the very brave, high-speed, 82nd Airborne stud-muffin that he is, his college is entirely paid-for when he leaves.

These twits have no clue.

A*holes.

"Little access to opportunities"? Isn't public education free in the US?

Oh, I know what they mean. Black people have little access to becoming white a*holes like these over-privileged elite sons of advantage.

Didn't Eddy Murphy and Dan Akroyd do a switcheroo movie? Let the overprivileged white boys give up their "opportunties" to those they feel so sorry for.

The military gives great opportunities to anyone who qualifies, and color of skin or amount of wealth are not part of the picture.

The military services ARE an opportunity.

I teach high school in the inner city in South Florida. It is indeed fertile recruiting for all branches of the military. I usually facilitate the recruiters who wish to come in and speak to the seniors I teach. I am one of the few conservative Republican teachers out of a faculty of over 175. I take extreme pains to point out the responsibilities of residency for the great percentage of our students who are foreign born. I find that almost universally, the kids are joining the military with the full knowledge of what it means to serve in the armed forces under time of war. However, they are also doing so with the unusual acuity to seek a military occupational specialty (MOS) that will keep them from combat, or out of direct fire probabilities at least. That's a goodly percentage. The rest of my students won't go even a fraction of that far. They just want to take and take and take. If they can't TAKE anymore and it looks like they might need to sacrifice, they all just say: Heck, I'll just go back to Haiti until it's gone. And I always reply: Why wait? GO NOW, nobody needs you here! Just don't let the door smack you in the butt on the way out. SeeeeeeeeYA! They don't get it and that's the standard for the immigrant population. At least for the kids I've come into contact with over the last eight years.

Truthfully, I don't think these "protestors" give a @#$%&! about "the underpriviliged." This is about being a good little pseudo-enlightened leftist and condemning the "evil" U.S. armed forces. Back when I was in school some fools "Camped out for Peace" during the first Gulf war. (rolls eyes)

The telling thing here is that there were less than 50 protestors at one of the most notoriously liberal campuses in the U.S. I truly believe most young people "get it" when it comes to national defense and fighting terror.

The other liberals on campus are probably too busy at some trendy coffee shop, talking over skinny chai lattes and hummus on pita chips about how they are enlightened and compassionate toward individuals without "access to privileges."

These goofs don't seem to realize the nature of our military. The great bulk of men and women serving never see combat. Only those who are in combat units. The majority of those in the Navy or Air Force, for example, never experience combat. So young people voluteering for military service are not automatic cannon fodder in search of a scholarship. But then what does one expect from this group and its allies? Truth, reason, facts?

I was talking about the liberal creeps who were protesting. They act as though the only way for the poor person to get a college education is to join the military, B*LL $#IT! When I was living in IN. I was attending Ivy Tech community college in Gary part time and working full time as a local truck driver, if you want something bad enough you`ll find a way. Its just more liberal class warfare crap.

Well, those students should offer to change places with those with fewer options. I can see it now, let those parents pay for someone elses education.

I have a seventeen year old son that has done the early enlistment and is so wrapped up in the PT the Marine Corp is getting them into right now. My son is so excited too be going in July to Boot Camp he can hardly wait.
If any of these so called leftist's only would have the balls to do what many of my sons friends and other your men & women are doing by joining a armed service they might get a clue on how the real world works , not just a rose colored view that they want to see.

These pimply faced pissants will grow up to be girlymen.

Their magnot infested dope smoking 60s hippie professors will do all they can to teach and preach American Hate.

But Ah!, alot of young people will not fall for it.

And there lies our future!

weldgophardline -

I'm glad to hear your son is so excited about boot camp! I LOVED boot camp-- I had 88 guys I call "brother".

Tell him to stay motivted and do everything as loud, as intense, and as quickly as he can. Give everything 100%. Boot camp ends and he'll look back on it as a great experience someday.

You never ever forget the name of your DIs. They will treat him well.

exactly, the only reason these people can even consider education as a "right" is because of the brave souls who died on the Beaches of Normandy and the streets of Fallujah
