Students protest Army Recruiting Station, they recruit kids with "little access to opportunities.”

Four University of Wisconsin students were arrested and charged with unlawful trespassing Thursday following a sit-in protest at the U.S. Army Military Recruitment Station in University Square.

The anti-war protest, which drew between 35 and 50 protesters outside the office, sought to bring attention to current recruitment practices and how they “focus on people who have little access to opportunities,” according to UW sophomore and protest participant Joel Feingold.

Associated Students of Madison Academic Affairs Chair Ashok Kumar, one of the four arrested, said he and the other protesters walked in and demanded the office be turned into a financial aid office, symbolizing students who have to join the army to pay for college.

“We said we don’t believe people would have to kill themselves to get an education, [which] is a born right,” Kumar said, adding about 45 minutes passed before the police arrived and arrested them.

The headline should read: University of Wisconsin students protest a U.S. Army Military Recruitment Station, because they "“focus on people who have little access to opportunities.”

I'm sure they all then gave up their slots at college to underprivlidged kids. I don't think I've read anything this month that made me as mad as this...

The military services ARE an opportunity.

Sigh. They just don't get it, do they?

No one is forcing people into the military. It gives people the opportunity.

It's funny, the engine of leftist politics is controlled by the sons of privilege and greased with the blood of the poor worker.

Every major socialist leader has been the son of privilege.

It is an opportunity and for many people, it's the only way to achieve what they want. I was in Eureka, Montana where there were no jobs despite my legal assistant training. Had I been more physically fit, I'd have joined the Coasties and gotten into JAG.

I think the armed forces gives everyone that participates opportunities not available anywhere else. Like destroying things with really kewl hardware.

And i'm sorry, even though it's irrelevant...

But my platoon had a lot of random rich white kids. We had an accountant serving as an E2, a graphic designer... there were more than enough kids who were bored of finished with college that just wanted to serve. It wasn't about what they were offering us, it was about serving your country and not being stuck in a little backwater town.

The most racist, discriminitory institutions I know of are colleges. When you join the service, you leave your past behind you. You can go as far as you want based on how well you perform-- your PFT scores, aptitude, etc. The service is even a model institution for racial integration-- unlike universities!

To do well in a college, you can go to an expensive private high school, get private SAT tutoring, have a class size of 15 kids and a teacher who cares... no wonder you'll get in somewhere nice-- and that's okay! But at at least in the service, you have to drop your past and everyone starts on equal footing.

Oh joy...more "military targets poor people" idiots.

I hate these fools, My wife has a Bach. in Biology from Randolph Macon and I will soon have a Bach. in Poly. Sci.

We are both enlisting in the Air Force because we want to. Neither of us are "well off" but we have other choices and opportunities if we did not want to join.

These damn kids need to go back to their frat houses and student centers and get a good buzz and barely pass their classes like most college students I know.

OK, I’ve done this before and will repeat it here. I live in the county with the highest percent of graduate degrees in Texas and one of the wealthiest.

The retired President of BMC Software ($54 million when he left BMC) and his City Councilwoman wife, have a son who is a Marine Captain.

Another City Councilman, a well to do Jewish financial adviser ( former Army), has a son who graduated from Vanderbilt in the spring of 2002 and is now a Navy LT. JG serving on the Kitty Hawk. He just reup’ed so he can move to the Nebraska, a sub.

The doctor who just bought and REBUILT the oldest mansion in the county has an enlisted Marine son.

A local Dentist who owns a couple of large clinics and is also an NFL official, has a son who graduated from Texas A&M in 2002 and is now an Air Force pilot flying F-15c out of England. His commitment is 11 & ½ years

A friend of mine in his late 30's who is a lawyer and ran for County Attorney a couple of years ago is a Reserve Army LTC who spent 9 months in Kosova. He did a tour of Afghanistan and is now in his second tour of Iraq.

My wife has a teaching teammate who’s brother is an enlisted Marine, and is on his second tour of Iraq. His father owns a business and his mother is a manager of a large concern.

A local OB-Gyn has a son who is a Marine Corporal.

The manager of the Country Club nearest me has an enlisted Marine son, also just back from Iraq.

Four of the seven members of my city council are veterans and one is married to a veteran.

Two members of my school board are veterans and three are married to veterans.

The current County Judge had four years in the Navy and the last one was former Army who stayed in the Texas guard.

I also live on a six house street. We have one retired Coast Guard Officer, three former solders including a Captain who was an Infantry Officer in Vietnam, and one enlisted seaman.

In the USA, you are entitled to a free education to the 12th grade. After that, "STUDENT" of the UW, you are expected to understand that further education will be paid for. You can earn money with a JOB-(find a Webster's and look up that word)- you can be smart enough to qualify for various scholarships, or you can be blessed with parents who planned for your HIGHER education.

I am a taxpayer. I do NOT owe you or anyone else a higher education than the 12th grade. Don't give me any BS about how it is "DUE" to you or to anyone else. All the school credits I got after high school I earned and I earned the money to attend the school. In fact, when I was taking courses at night, I was working 10 hours a day.

You have no right to infuse yourself into another taxpayer funded location- the Army Recruiting office- and make yet again a fool of yourself.

You do not have the right to demand that I spend further tax money from my earnings on your selfish demands. Get a grip and get a life and GET THE HELL OUT OF THE ARMY RECRUITING STATION IN MY HOMETOWN!!!!

Uh--might be a little off the mark. Sure, some of the enlisted ranks are populated by the lower socio-economic strata--maybe. So what. My son joined the Guard while still in high school. His best buddy at boot camp was the son of an author most would recognize. Neither are deprived. My 20 yr old son has travelled a good deal out of conus, and served one stint overseas with the Guard. He just signed a ROTC contract (declining a govt "scholarship" for personal flexibility) with two years remaining of college, and hopes to remain in combat arms.

I suspect not many of these protestors have joined to have a first hand sense of the enlistee demographics--and since EVERY LAST ONE inked voluntarily, the statements are specious and laced with drivel.

Not this again. People only have 'little' opportunities then they are too lazy to look for them; in which case, they don't really deserve them anyway.

But it's sad, again, that these idiots seem to think that the military is some sort of 'last resort' that should only be surrendered to after all possible options have been exhausted.

Thats funny, last time I looked there was still a community college system in this country, not to mention Pell Grants and numerous Government student loan programs. Maybe they`re just p*ssing and moaning because they want FREE college educations?
