Alamia, 63, an Islip Republican, declined to comment, referring to Warren G. Clark, a court spokesman.

You can bet yer bottom dollar if it was a Democrat it wouldn't mention his party affiliation, IF this was given the story in the first place.

As for Alamia, keep up the good work!

It happened in CI. I can see that happening. Doesn't really surprise me.

There are signs posted on the courtroom doors telling everyone to turn off electronic devices. The bailiff reminds everyone to turn that stuff off before the judge takes the bench.

When I've seen this happen, the bailiff usually confiscates the phone, and some courts will keep the phone overnight.

You're not even allowed to bring a phone into the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia.

Just finished reading the article. Apparently this girl wanted to play in an adult world, yet expected the consequences of a teenager.

From the article:

Interesting that they point out the Judge was a Republican.

Well, she WAS warned. ROFLOLing too hard to care about the whining which will invariably follow. Perhaps she has not learned how to follow simple instructions.

Too many judges are drunk with power.

Baliff should have simply taken the cell phone away. Problem solved and the punishment would fit the crime.

Gee, if you're going to get 21 days for contempt, shouldn't you have had the opportunity to do something "special" and willful to merit it, such as mooning the judge, calling him a vile name, or worse? IMHO the sentence is excessive, and the judge suffers from poor judgement (insert mandatory concern over absolute power corrupting absolutely, blah blah blah, here).

Iset my phone on vibrate and keep it in my front pocket, so I don't have this problem.

As a side note: I look forward to wrong numbers . . . :-)

Yeah, I'm definitely in agreement with a few of the others on here. What this judge did was overkill and unacceptable.

It's sickening to see this slavish obeisance to authority figures that some people on this thread apparently have. No wonder we're in some of the messes we're in today when you carry around this devout "authority knows best" attitude. And no wonder some people on the left call conservatives fascist.

I can see the judge holding her in contempt and levying a fine, but 21 days in the slammer, jeesum!

This judge needs to get a grip! Its a noisy world out here for all of us. Maybe he should move to the country.

I saw a man in a movie theater prepare to jump over several rows of seats to attack a phone that rang once. That guy needs to be sedated.

Good for the judge. Some folks like this girl basically flip off those that state what the rules are.
Perhaps the little brat will learn a lesson.

21 days for contempt???

Imagine if someone actually commits a crime?! "Off with her head!"

I always find it a bit pompous of the courts when we have a first amendment that gives us the right to hold our government in contempt but the legal trade union believes so much as any disrespectful comment or act towards the court should be met with a harsh punishment.

A simple fine of $25 or the taking of the phone until the following day would suffice.

BTW, have a cell phone ring at a Microsoft meeting and the person sings a show tune.

When Acevedo's phone subsequently sounded, Alamia called the teenager forward and asked, "Did you think I was playing with you?"

It's a little strong sentence .. but he did warn her

People who hate cell phones are worse than smoke-nazis. They are phones, sometimes they ring, get used to it. If I'm talking to a friend at a restaurant what difference does it make it they are at the table with me or on the phone?

Screw the judge. It's time all judges realized that they are just government employees, no better than the clowns at the DMV. A little power makes a little man even smaller
