The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Connect these dots, now
Full Story
"We should have secured the Mexican border."

That could be the pitiful lament we hear from negligent U.S. officials if Al Qaeda pulls off an attack on the United States using weapons of mass destruction smuggled across our southern frontier.

Were that horrendous event to happen, leaders in the administration and Congress would be justly hit with the same question that was perhaps unjustly cast at them and their predecessors after the unprecedented Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: Why didn't they connect the dots?

Republicans dominate 3 to 1. Jeb is very pro-gun. This won't stand a chance until after the 06 elections and it'll come back if the RATS win the Governor's mansion. OTOH, if the 'Pubbies keep the mansion, it's prolly dead forever.

But Gwen Margolis has been a thorn in our flesh forever. She needs a liberal butt whuppin'!

"Their surprise turned to horror when tests on the eagles came back four days later: The smuggled birds were infected with avian influenza H5N1, the Southeast Asian virus that health authorities fear could blow up into a pandemic and kill millions. . ."

Go back some threads...we expected peregrines would be used.

Flu keeps rolling around and mutating. I don't see it ever being lethal to a level of 1 billion people. A genetic cross of smallpox with a hemorraghic fever producer such as Marburg or Ebola would be a different problem. Especially if it was transmitted by airborne droplets. Ken Alibek and his former co-workers in the Soviet Union produced some pretty ugly bioweapons.

WOW Check out this law...

Russia takes first step towards new terror law
17 Dec 2004 17:10:15 GMT

(Releads, adds government reaction)

By Ivan Rodin

MOSCOW, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Russia's parliament gave initial support on Friday to a new anti-terrorism law seen by some deputies as undermining people's rights, but the government immediately reacted by saying it should be toned down.

snip

It would give Russian authorities the right to impose a 60-day security clampdown in any part of the country solely on suspicion that a terror attack was being planned.

The draft law foresees the imposition of "a state of terrorist danger" if authorities receive information -- even unconfirmed -- that suggests an attack is being planned.

During that period, even if no attack takes place, authorities could introduce emergency measures including banning public demonstrations, tapping telephones, conducting spot street checks and restricting movements of people and traffic.

The bill easily passed a first reading in the State Duma (lower house).
