WASHINGTON - On his first day back in the Senate since losing the presidential election, Sen. John F. Kerry [related, bio] hunkered down for hours in his aptly labeled hideaway office in the U.S. Capitol and spurned questions about how he was adjusting.
Heading for his office, the Bay State senator told reporters he could not answer how it felt to be back because he was busy with ``stuff,'' then darted up a stairway.
Kerry attended a morning meeting at which Senate Democrats chose their leaders for next year, but did not address his colleagues.
He skipped the weekly Democratic caucus luncheon, instead dispatching one of his aides for Chinese take-out to eat in his private office.
Former Kerry running mate Sen. John Edwards [related, bio]
did speak at the luncheon, encouraging his colleagues to find a way to let voters in ``red'' states know that Democrats are on their side.
Sen. Harry Reid, who won election as Senate Democratic leader, said his colleagues are letting Kerry decide what he wants to do next.
``Sen. Kerry's going to find his own role,'' Reid (D-Nev.) said at a press conference. ``Sen. Kerry is not a shrinking violet.''
Kerry thanked some senators individually and granted interviews to Massachusetts television stations, remaining vague about possibly running again in 2008 by saying he's ``not shutting any doors.''
But he brushed off reporters who waited hours outside his office. Asked by one what the senator missed most or least about the campaign trail, Kerry replied, ``I'm not going to do an interview right now.''
After snapping ``What?'' at another journalist, who again inquired what Kerry was up to, he replied, ``Work.''
Waiting for an elevator, Kerry elaborated, ``I'm always happy to be back here. It's a privilege to represent Massachusetts.''
Kerry held a meeting to thank his staff, and aides said he spent the day making phone calls and working with staffers to prepare legislation for the next Congress. Although aides had touted a speech Kerry planned to make from the Senate floor about the national debt, it looked likely yesterday to be put off.
Waiting for an elevator, Kerry elaborated, ``I'm always happy
to be back here. It's a privilege to represent Massachusetts.''Kerry added "Besides, where else can you 'work', not show up
76% of the time and STILL get paid in full? Life is GOOD!!"hehe!! :^D
New York voters are dumber than rocks.
LOL!
[What? Nobody's asked him to make sports equipment commercials?]...LOL!
What? Only one hunting trip this season. I thought he was an avid waterfowler. No kite boarding? No pick-up football games. Come Johnboy, where's all the fun??????
Waiting for the Botox to wear off.
hahahaa! You got that right!
"Man I love photo-ops that make me look commanding."
Just heard Kerry's speech on the debt limit on Hannity's radio show.
As Hannity said over the speech, "Blah, blah, blah, you lost. Sounds like a man mumbling on the corner. Does he think anyone is listening to this?"
Sheesh, I can't STAND the sound of sKerry's voice.
And there are no democrats except Zell Miller who are on my side.
He retreated to his office to continue directing those working on his behalf to overturn the vote in Ohio.
He might not be shutting any doors but I sure wish he'd SHUT HIS MOUTH & just go away! What an arrogant jerk!
At least he no longer has to be "amazed at the number of people who want to introduce themselves to you in the men's room."
Is it really?
"....and thank god I still have a job. I wonder if they've posted the days off/holiday schedule yet."
ROFL!
I swear....I *still* don't know what the DNC was thinking....;))
"Former Kerry running mate Sen. John Edwards did speak at the luncheon, encouraging his colleagues to find a way to let voters in ``red'' states know that Democrats are on their side."
Oooh!
Yes!
Let's *all* get in touch with our "inner democrat" Dark Sides!
LOL!
