MINNEAPOLIS - Rep. Gil Gutknecht is pushing legislation that would replace the federal income tax with a national sales tax.
"Think of a world where there is no income tax, where you get to keep everything you earn and you pay the tax man when you buy stuff," Gutknecht, R-Minn., told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.

To rid us of the income tax will keep Republicans in power for many years.
I support the NRST in principle, but I would need to see the 16th Amendment repealed before I would be comfortable with an NRST in fact.
Otherwise, I fear we would end up with BOTH.
pretty much if crazy eyes Dayton is against it, I'm for it.
I'm all for it. But, it'll happen when pigs fly or hell freezes over (whichever comes first).
God bless Gil Gutknecht!!!!!
I can't stand the talk about this.. I just want it to happen.
If this was in place, I'd be working about 80 hours/week, 3 different jobs.
Worse yet, there will be an IRS agent sitting next to every cash register. I have yet to see the NRST people address exactly who is supposed to collect that sales tax.
NRST ping
Um... the same people who collect it now? 45 states plus DC already have sales taxes -- the mechanism is already there.
There was a Gutknecht's Meat shop in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Lord have mercy, they had the BEST garlic stick summer sausage!
They went out of business, I think.
I know, I'm "off topic" but I was just reminded! :-)
I guess you live in Florida where there is no state sales tax?
just curious, would repealing the 16th amendment (I agree w/you, it has to happen before NRST/"fairtax") affect state income taxation at all? or is it only needed for the federal income tax?
I don't care if you are off topic, just the mention of garlic stick summer sausage has put a smile on my face (and a rumble in my belly!). I have to say, I'm pretty jealous of you folks in the upper midwest. I love German, Polish and Scandanavian foods . . . but you just don't really find much of that in Kentucky. Want to work out a deal where I send you some dried beans for summer sausage? lol
If this was in place, I wouldn't have to be working about 80 hours/week, 3 different jobs.
FL has not state income tax. It has plenty of sales tax.
LoL? What?
So you think if taxes were lower, you would work less?? That's like putting a square peg into a round hole IMHO.
Taxes are what discourages me from working a second job. Not worth busting my rear for a few pennies that puts me in the next bracket.
Whoops.. :).. My bad.
LOL! I'm in Tulsa...but my husband is a Swede from Silver Bay Minnesota. His family lives in Chippewa Falls now.
I am from S. Texas...we had a lot of fun our first years learning all about our different culinary delights!
Smoked fish, for example. I'd never had anything like the smoked fish on the North Shore of Lake Superior. I had polished off a couple of whole fish when my husband commented "You know, you're supposed to eat small pieces of that on crackers." LOL
I believe it would only affect the federal sales tax.
