Actually, this is not true. A study of 20,000 homeschooled students done in 1998 found that the average homeschooler tested in the 80th percentile on national tests and that 25% are a grade ahead of their peers.

The study also found that parents were more educated then non-homeschooling parents.

The study was conducted by Lawrence Rudner of the University of Maryland.

The homeschooled children I have met can actually be overwhelming. They don't size other kids up to see who's "cool" beforehand, they just get in there and play. At an SCA event I once attended, I was camping with a large group of homeschooled families. When I first sat at the fire, a little girl came up, introduced herself, and plopped herself on my lap.

I agree on that point. I have met a couple of these isolated kids and that's what they are, isolated when they don't have a group of peers to learn peer socialization skills with.

so you're basing this on a couple of kids? how many public schooled kids have you met with bad attitudes? no respect for authority? overly shy in front of adults? not able to function well in college?

i have met FEW public-schooled kids with the capability to interact with people of all ages the way homeschool kids do... most public-schooled kids i know ONLY want to hang out with people their own ages... getting to know some homeschooled kids before i was even married made me realize that when i had my own family, i would want to homeschool my children...

"so you're basing this on a couple of kids?"

No I was basing a couple of isolated kids on the couple of isolated home school kids I've met.

"how many public schooled kids have you met with bad attitudes?"

I didn't say home school kids or any kids were "bad" just the couple of home schooled kids I met were somewhat detached, aloof. Comprehension, it can be useful in your case.

All I can think of every time a lame incident like comes up is how fortunate (lucky) I was compared to kids today that I attended the schools I did, when I did. Us students back then had a blast and interacted with respect and admiration for our teachers, some even becoming long time friends into our adulthood. The teachers during my school years even into college did not ram their "personal" agenda's down our throats, they taught students, they encouraged students, like teachers are suppose to.
There are still a lot of those teachers out there, but with the media (and some of the education liberals) focusing on the bad things, you usually don't hear about them. That is the only thing I teach for--to hopefully make a positve impact on some child's life.
