The funniest part about this is that hippies in the '60s were the ones who started coming back to homeschooling. There are many liberal homeschoolers, also.

Well played, Pitiricus! Bravo!

By accident or design, you've succeeded brilliantly in turning the topic completely away from the utter lunacy of the school's actions, based on unsupported anecdotal assertions about how home schooled children lack "skills."

Of course, the topic at hand began as, and should still focus on the outrageous and completely out of proportion actions of the school administration, rather than speculation about whether Deirdre Faegre (you may remember her, she's the student who was suspended in the original story) will ultimately have the "skills" you think she'll need down the road. I'm left to wonder what "skills" the public school has been teaching her, when their focus is on the horrendous danger facing today's youth who embrace the cart wheeling culture.

Whether or not most home schooled students are able to master the "skills" you mentioned, I suspect that the Faegre family has taken the appropriate action in this specific case by getting their child out of there.

But raising a child is a bit of a crap game.

That implies that raising a "successful" adult from childhood is a matter of chance. Certainly you don't really believe that. There are any number of things one can do to shift the odds.

I'm sure that statistically, a married man and woman, raising a child together in the same home, will do better than a single mother with no father-figure to assist.

I'm not anti-public school. I simply think my son will have a better future if he's educated at home.

Oh, but your religion DOES get taught in the shools.

It is the religion of secular humanism.

e.g. Same sex marriage now gets taught in Massachusetts public schools.

Your religion successfully strips Christianity and Judaism from History, literature and civics.

Our children get the bland, dry, lifeless, athiest version of history.

Catholic societies, for example, are always multicultural, we don't need athiest-marxists to establish what multiculturalism is. My church and my social circle is already multicultural and has been for 1900 years.

As I said, if you want to indoctrinate your kids, then it isn't education we discuss but something else...

The first step in setting up schools as centers of indoctrination is to remove logic from the curriculum, as has been done in government schools.

The core of the medieval, Catholic/Christian education was the Trivium: logic, grammar and rhetoric, skills which give children the ability to find truth and analyze subjects critically.

Most certified teachers are unfamiliar with the history of compulsory government schooling. You're not alone.

Again I am very skeptical of the "epidemics" of ADD. In a lot of cases I believe that bad teachers who don't want to be bothered prefer to say that the child has ADD instead of dealing with him (in the majority of cases, it is a him as boys are more boisterous). I had some experience of this, as my son was told he had ADD by one teacher and the psychologist told that the teacher should be examined. He finished school on the Dean's list and had an SAT of 1600... :-)

I would be the first one to acknowledge that this is a failing of schools... And I would work to remedy this...

But do you say that in the majority of cases the children have ADD? I don't think so...

For instance the Scottish miracle, that made Scotland the economic powerhouse of Europe was based on schooling in Parish schools.

Ah, the desireabilty of a good Christian education. Finally, something we can agree on.

Maybe... But schools existed much before.

Of course. The university was invented by the Catholic Church.

But Christian education was never forcible. Compulsory schooling is the gift of Modernism.

I know for instance that if another kid had ever tried to speak of Jesus to my kids, I would have sued the school.

If I wasn't convinced before this statement, I am now. You are out of your mind.

Sue THE SCHOOL because a KID might speak to your KID about Jesus?

Yeah, that's what this country needs. More lawsuits based upon what children say to one another.

We may be close to agreeing on something. I think ADD is a giant scam and invented problem to relieve parents and teachers of much of the responsibility of child rearing, discipline, and control.

ADD IS A SCAM!

Your right...

But yes, there is a random element in raising a child because it depends on the child, on the parents, on exterior factors and on interactions between all these factors.

You can try and shift the odds, but the random element will always stay...

This is life I guess...

The whole point is that people have the right to decide how they want to educate their children. Most liberals oppose that.

Government schools are one of the few ways they can indoctronate your children into marxist ideology. It's right in the communist manifesto, capture the schools and universities, capture the media, and you capture the next generation. It's all in the plan.

He doesn't want his kids to be "indoctrinated." He's open-minded and tolerant.

Seeing that you are silent on the two logic error's you made I assume you admit your error and wish to change the subject? True ? Seeing that you admit your error, please provide some fact to back up your posistion.

Yes but the modern school in the US is the legacy of Dewey, et. al. And they were enamored by the Prussian model, not the Scottish one. The public schools today reflect their intent.

I want to do a survey on how often everyone here is bullied on a regular basis. I was bullied through high school. Yet, when I got to college the things that were always considered "weird" about me (my taste in music, etc.) were suddenly considered cool. It has been 13-1/2 years since I left high school. I haven't dealt with a bully to this day. Maybe I should have stood up to those bullies years ago and beat the snot out of them, but I wouldn't have been allowed to do that in school. I would have gotten in trouble for self defense.

Yes, there are situations outside of school when a person may be bullied, but they have more options. It also helps to know that someone supports what you decide to do about it, rather than, "Just suck it up. It'll help build character."

Well, how would you react if my kids would tell to yours "Jesus, if he ever existed, was not the messiah, not god and belief in Jesus as part of a so-called trinity is politheism..."

I am sure you would be outraged, but this is the truth of Judaism... So better keep proselytism out of public schools because these kind of remarks are a two-way street!

Right from the John Kerry / John Edwards game plan.

But the poster is a "moderate".

A pro abortion, anti homeschooling, pro special rights for gays, French college professor, moderate.

I'm still waiting to hear the "moderate" positions on social security, taxes, graduated income taxes, government entitlements and a few dozen others.

I suspect AquinasFan would be outraged, but I also suspect that AquinasFan wouldnt drop all he was doing and contact his attorney to sue the school within which it happened.
