Terror-loving Saudi religious scholars have called on Iraqis to support militants waging jihad against the U.S.-led coalition forces, saying fighting the occupation was a duty and a right. In an open letter to the Iraqi people posted on the Internet yesterday, 26 Saudi scholars and religious preachers stressed that armed attacks launched by militant Iraqi groups on U.S. troops and their allies in Iraq were "legitimate" resistance. The scholars -- some of whom have been criticized in the past for their extremist views -- issued a fatwa, or religious edict, prohibiting Iraqis from offering any support for military operations carried out by U.S. forces against militant strongholds. "Fighting the occupiers is a duty for all those who are able. It is a jihad [holy war to push back the assailants," said the letter. "Resistance is a legitimate right. A Muslim must not inflict harm on any resistance man or inform about them. Instead, they should be supported and protected." Among the 26 scholars who signed the letter are influential Sunni Muslim clerics, Sheik Safar al-Hawali, Sheik Nasser al-Omar, Sheik Salman al-Awdah, Sheik Sharif Hatem al-Aouni and Sheik Awad al-Qarni. Al-Hawali -- jailed in the 1990s for five years without trial because of his criticism of U.S. involvement in the 1991 Gulf War -- is known for his radical views and was once close to al Qaeda terror mastermind Osama bin Laden.

I think it's time we got over the idea that the Saudis are our allies. They ain't.
& this is the country to whom the US want's to sell PAC-3 missiles & upgrade their AWACS,F-15s & Abrams tanks(to M1A2 standard)??
We need to stop considering mosques "religious" buildings. We see what they're "preaching."
Maybe they haven't heard Bush was reelected.

Saudi Arabia must have hundreds if not thousands of religious scholars in the kingdom. Is this really as significant as it's made out to be?
As I understand it, some of these clerics were (are) Al Qaeda operatives. They should be arrested and prosecuted. That's where the Saudi Government should be held to account IMO.

The reason why the Saudi "scholars" are calling for a holy war against the US is because they can see that the entire future of Wahhabism (and the Sunnies and the Ikhwan) is at stake in upcoming impending battle in Fallujah.
The clerics through out the Middle East are going to lose much of their support in a about week or so - and they know it.
Agreed. Mosques are nothing but safe houses for terrorists.
I say we give the Saudies 30 days to take out these "clerics" and if they don't, we will.
