The Senate version of the bill had so many "poison pill" expansions of Federal gun-control laws, including an AWB extension, that it needed to die. The House passed a clean version of the bill, and hopefully there were enough Republican gains in the Senate to pass a clean version next year.
As for Allen's stance on the AWB, he was initally against it, flipped his position in October, 2000 just before he was elected, then flipped back this year by voting against it when it was approved as an amendment to the lawsuit pre-emption bill. I suspect he changed his stance because 1) Governor Mark Warner will challenge Allen for his seat in 2006, 2) Warner has done nothing to anger gun owners and in fact has signed into law every pro-gun bill passed by our General Assembly, and 3) Allen is a savvy enough politician to realize that angering one of the GOP's core constituencies in a "red" state is not the way to get re-elected.
Senator Warner, OTOH, is a disappintment.
From the replies, sounds like the majority of you like George Allen.
Actually they can serve as many terms as they like .. but not consecutively. The restriction, in the state constitution, is just on consecutive terms.

A great man. I grew up watching his father coach my favorite team.
Allen keeps looking better and better.
But I'm going to wait until 2008 to pledge my support for any particular nominee.
He was governor before he was Senator.
I don't care what Frist is doing, he is unelectable. He does not inspire. He is slack-faced and malleable. He does not project anything inspiring. He is NOT telegenic, a requisite nowadays. And most of all, you do not get a sense, unconsciously, that "This guy can lead!"
I get it with W (even if I disagree with him on things), and I get it with George Allen.
And if Frist is the nominee, think of what happened the last time we ran a pale candidate (Bob Dole): A Clinton got elected. Same thing this time.
Warner will not run for the US Senate against George Allen. He can't win. He may very well run for POTUS. We shall see.

Normally I would agree with you that Senators are not good Presidential candidates. But since Hillary will be the Dem nominee and she's a Senator you'd have Senator vs. Senator. And of course Allen was a Gov.

Okay, it's agreed, You will not support Allen, because he supports the "leftist anti-gun agenda." Yeah, he's just like Hilary (who will be your president if one-issue folks like you stay home; and if she's president, then you will know what that leftist anti-gun agenda really is).

If anyone comes forth with a variation on the way things are done (say, you're not allowed to have your own 125-foot guard tower with six 50-cal machine guns on it...in a residential neighborhood), you start freaking.
