Allen has an excellent record as governor and now as Senator. That net 4 gain in the Senate was huge. Plus it plugged him in to fundraising networks, etc.

After studying the issue, Sen. Allen came to the conclusion that: "The simple fact is the Assault Weapons Ban only attacks the cosmetic features of a gun, banning some guns even though they function exactly the same as hundreds of other semi-automatic firearms."
He noted that, "In Virginia we have seen that incarcerating violent felons is the best crime reduction policy. I still believe our focus should be on criminals, not guns, and it should be on programs that work, like Project Exile and the Abolition of Parole."
Sen. Allen also expressed his concern "that reauthorizing this gun ban legislation will serve as a platform, inviting added restrictions on Second Amendment rights. The current law, then, only makes sense if the ultimate goal it is to ban more and more guns in the future, something I cannot support. This can be seen in several proposals that permanently ban a large number of guns that citizens lawfully use for competition, hunting or self defense."

Yes, I read it. When I tried to talk to Allen about it to clarify something he had said then, his campaign manager Chris Lacavitas (sp) said that Allen supported the ban, renewal of the ban, and strengthening of the ban. Allen confirmed this moments later. He reversed only when word of a possible challange from Warner reached him.
I have no problems supporting Allen if he does something proactive on the gun issue. If he doesn't, I won't waste my time doing the things for him like I did for Bush this year.

I wish he'd have taken a look at Arkansas then... We had a decent opportunity with Jim Holt. Poor guy had almost no backing and still made it to 44% or so against Lincoln.

I think he's brilliant (and extremely nice, as I've met him twice), but he just doesn't come across well for some reason. I could see him getting eviscerated in debates and by the press. But then again, I could also be wrong. ;)

Get your facts straight. George Allen was Governor of Virginia before he became US Senator from Virginia. That makes him an ex-governor just as Ronald Reagan was an ex-governor when he ran for President in both 1976 and 1980.

There is nothing "harmless" about banning guns. Because of Allen's previous support of the leftist anti-gun agenda he will NOT be getting any support from me.
Looks like he voted against a bill that prevented lawsuits against gun manufacturers, where the manufacturers weren't liable (i.e. when criminals commit a crime using a gun). Lawsuits against gun makers is another liberal democrat attempt to thwart the 2nd amendment.
