Is Bush Like, Stupid, or What? (irony alert)
Headcrash Central ^ | 10/25/04 | Bruce Bethke

Posted on 10/25/2004 7:14:35 AM PDT by Lucretia Borgia

So I'm in the local Blockbuster the other night, returning some DVDs. It was a slow night, and the clerks were ignoring me and talking with each other while I was popping open cases and making sure my kids had put the right discs back in the right boxes. As I snapped the last case shut and dropped it down the return chute, I began to pay some minor attention to the clerks' conversation, and that is when I heard one of them utter the most absolutely amazing statement:

"No, dude, I cannot vote for George Bush, 'cause, like, I am so much smarter than him."
This, I must admit, caused a moment of sheer stunned silence on my part. I wondered: should I just shake my head and go off to look at the new releases? Bite my tongue and quietly leave the store? Or should I slap that little turd down without the slightest hint of mercy?
"Ah, I see. You're smarter than a Harvard MBA. That must be why you're a fat, pimply guy with a greasy pony-tail who works for minimum wage at Blockbuster."
Maybe I should have done that. Maybe it was a teachable moment. But I've worked in education, and I've been a TA, and I have found that the Socratic method is completely wasted on people who are beyond irony. So, at that moment, I chose to take a deep breath, shake my head, and wander off, to mind my own business.

But the moment has stayed with me, for several days now, and I've continued to wonder: just why do liberals insist on characterizing President Bush as being stupid? After all, the man flew supersonic jet fighters for the Texas Air National Guard. He received an MBA from Harvard. While I've met a few arrogant gonzo lunatic fighter jocks, and more than a few ethically repellent MBAs, I have yet to meet one of either group that I would consider "stupid."

No, the more I think about it, the more firmly I come to believe that the real problem lies in the nature of modern liberalism. It must be hard to be a liberal these days; there is so little ammunition left in the can. You see, as nearly as I can determine it, the key reason why liberals insist on calling President Bush "stupid" is that that is the only insult they have left. Any other perjorative term they might use could offend an important liberal constituency. I mean, before they could even start to think about calling him, say --

-- an amoral skirt-chasing, commie-loving, draft-dodging, race-baiting, baby-killing, bribe-taking, pill-popping, coke-snorting, pot-smoking, crack-smoking, pole-smoking, boy-buggering, lesbian-licking, sheep-sodomizing, promiscuity-promoting, ambulance-chasing, morbidly obese America-hating alcoholic traitor --

-- why, they'd have to repudiate John Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, John Edwards, Barney Frank, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Jesse Jackson, NARAL, NOW, PETA, and NAMBLA, just for starters.

So, like I said, the painfully circumscribed vocabulary for invective that is permitted to modern liberals --

Why, it's almost enough to make you feel sorry for the poor dumb bastards.

>>> Bush is the only president in history to cut taxes while at war. <<<

So you want a President that will only do what other presidents have done in the past? I'm sure glad leaders of business and industry don't follow your thinking.

"What happened to the togetherness that was shared after 9-11?"

Conservatives got their act together and decided to FIGHT THE ENEMY......Liberals seem to be trying to figure out how to NOT hurt the enemy's feelings.....THAT'S the DIFFERENCE!

The liberals spit on it.

By which I meant he admitted there was a war. I should probably have added he wasn't spouting the usual demented lib talking points, some of which we have had posted today.

So, in the (limited) sense that he is agreable to a discussion, and not a shouting match, yeah he's close to our position. All he needs to do is read up on how taxation destroys economies, and not vote Kerry.

Bush is the only president in history to cut taxes while at war.

And achieved the desired result of making the recession one of the shallowest and shortest in history.

My main problem is that he did not take back the tax break while we were at war.

Now here again, this is bordering on genius. You pretend to want tax hikes, which would have only put the brakes on economic recovery, to get the liberals and undecideds on your side. Then you deliver the killing blow, "During times of war the country is supposed to help out" (cleverly recalling the sacrificial WWII generation), which can only serve to remind anyone with a functioning memory that the *only* thing left has done since 9/11 is PROTEST THE WAR AND COMPARE BUSH TO HITLER!

My hat is off to you, sir. Excellent psy-ops.

First, "Welcome to FR!"

I can tell from the tone of your post that you are well intentioned. That will be a benefit to you - and us - if we are both "smart" about it.

I am not at all bothered by the characterization that Republican Presidents take council from their advisors and cabinet. Running a house is complex: My wife and I share management responsibilities. But there is one authority and he is accountable for what happens in the home.

Running the greatest free nation on earth is somewhat more complex and requires a division of labor - for the purpose of determining choices and impacts. One person can't possibly get a handle on all of the details - but one person is responsible for what happens.

The fact is, President Bush makes the hard decisions. Any statement to the contrary is not informed.

It would worry me more if I thought that President Clinton had not depended on the council of his cabinet and advisors. That, too is not the case.

Regarding this:
I wish politics were clear of such vile names and just focused on the issues.

I couldn't agree more.

As a liberal, why do you suppose that Senator Kerry's 20 year record in the Senate is ignored by the mainstream media?

Here is the problem as I see it. You come to a conservative site and say you're voting for Kerry because of Bush's tax cut. Well, fine I guess. So you must not be socially conservative because there are many other issues that are important to us. Gay marriage, partial birth abortion, abortion to name a few. That trumps any and all tax cut problem you might have.

Zorro, A couple that had been married for 25 years were out for a drive, the wife turns to her husband and says, "How come we don't sit next to each other like we did when we where younger"? The husband replies, "I'm sitting where I've always been". Conservatives are where we were have always been.

I think with work a smaller amount of money can be taxed(what the conservatives want) and important social programs(what the liberals want) can be done. The money needs to be spent more wisely than it has been since WW2.

Therein lies the difference. Conservatives believe that the people should keep more of their own money and make their own decisions on how it is spent. Liberals consider the amount of money people can keep is a State decision and that the Govrenment can decide better how to spend it. Since WWII the Dems had a virtural lock on Congress for forty years. It was only in 1994 that the GOP got control over the House. The Dems have been the ones who have not exercised fiscal responsibility over that period.

If something is not done to reform Social Security and Medicare soon, we are going to have a financial meltdown starting in a little over a decade when we start paying out more in benefits than we are taking in.

Liberals equate intelligence in another person with the degree to which that person embraces liberal belief.

Because of the fact that EVENTS have repudiated their most sacrosanct tenets, they must dwell in a world of constant affirmation of the lies required to prop up their self-ruse. Survival requires the delusion be constantly sustained and supported.

History must be rewritten, and reality distorted, language must be perverted, the truth obscured, or else the WITCH melts with exposure to sunlight.

Whoa, Dude! LOL!! Let me tell you a little story. I used to tend bar in a place that had lots of regulars. The barflies would begin every election season by being rabidly anti-incumbent. So far so good. As the election approached they would get more and more passionate about throwing the rascals out. When the registration deadline passed, a change would always happen, now the contest would be who could find the most wrong with the election process. Voting was a waste of time anyhow. The election was rigged. Only a fool would waste time voting. I doubt as any of the passionate partisans of a month previously had ever registered to vote in their lives. In the end, they did what they did best, holding up the bar and bellyaching. Lots of that will be going around this last week. Don't let it bother you, it's just the MSM version of bar talk. Get out and vote.

This is funny to me because we went to a video store last week. And everywhere I looked, something like three rows, was Michael Moore's face on his movie.

And I ran into my husband and asked him, 'Did you see that fat ugly communist sleaze has rows and rows of movies over there?'

And a few seconds later I was the object of some serious staring from people around me who had overheard me.

I just hope they could think about what I said. Not likely but you never know.

PS. I live in liberal heaven. Washington state.
