Boston Herald ^ | 10-20-2004 | Tony Massarotti

Following Millar's lead, Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling went on ESPN yesterday and described Rodriguez' actions as "bush league," adding that such a thing was "not nexpected."

You don't run "through" a pitcher who isn't blocking the first baseline. That's a cheapass move that is worthy of "girlieman" contempt. As tiringly usual, an active contingent of Freepers have everything exactly bassackward. Rodriguez tried to "inadvertantly" knock the ball out of Arroyo's glove, but his gambit was too obvious and illegal, and life goes on.

God, I hope St. Louis wins this thing.

I detest pretty boy pay-rod but it was just a natural reaction to try to swipe at the arm....kind of like grabbing the face mask in football.....you don't really mean to do it but you put your hand out to stop someone and you just grab it...

the fraud part was when he argued and acted like a prima dona afterwards....

in reality, if he had just bowled the guy down, he would have been awarded first base if not second....

the ONLY reason I care about the Sox is for Curt.....

If he "just bowled the guy down" on the FIRST BASE LINE he would have been called out, started a bench clearing brawl, been ejected from the game and possibly suspended from any subsequent playoff games, and been IN THE WRONG. You don't run down a pitcher on the first base line. You don't bury anyone but the catcher at home plate. He's wearing padding and leg armor, he's ready. That's timeless baseball etiquette.

Have you ever PLAYED baseball at any advanced level? Inadvertant collisions are bone breakers, much less a 215 pound stud running over a defenseless 175 pound stringbean when he's not ready. That's unsporting to the max.

I saw the play and Arroyo was running across the base line when Arod veered right and swiped the ball out. He could of correctly just kept going straight and knocked Arroyo down!

Oh c'mon already. He tried to knock the ball out of a guy's glove. Big deal. He's one of the greatest baseball players ever. A "girlieman"? That's absurd. Oh, the beauty of being an anonymous fatarsed internet jockey.

He cheated, broke the rules in baseball, therefore he was out. Not exactly a "great" act.

This is idiocy. If the BoSox had A-Rod, the Yankees would have been the wild card winner instead.

He's not talking about A-rods ability or wether or not he would have helped the team win, He's talking about a premadonna mixing in with the ruff and tumble personel on the Sox.

Do you remember the great A's teams of the seventies? They all hated each other on those teams, yet they won three championships in a row. IOW, A-Rod would have been just fine on the 2004 BoSox.

What are you talking about? The only time you can run somebody over is when a defender IS blocking the base line. Arroyo was not on the base line so A-Rod was supposed to try to avoid the tag which he didn't. If You leave the base path to bowl someone over, that is interference and you are out but if the defender is blocking the line, he is free game.

I do remember those teams, they couldn't get through a week without fist fights in the clubhouse.

A-Rod would have been OK with this team, but the point is the Sox won it all without him and maintained their unique chemistry.

You also must remember that Boston sports writers would dis-own their mothers if they dawned the pinstipes which is what A-Rod did.

Tim McCarver is a great announcer. He has a tremendous knowledge of the game and, although like all of us makes an occasional mistake, he has taught me many of the finer points of the game.

I believe the expression "bush league" simply refers to minor league ball players.

It's used as a derogatory term in sports. When something is low and unseemly, it's "bush league".

In the audio clip I heard, the interviewer asked Schilling what he thought of Rodriguez's behavior by saying "Did you think that was a bush league sort of play?"

And Schilling replied, "NOT bush league, Kerry league!"

Heard the clip played on Steve Malzberg's show the night after the game.

Sorry. McCarver is painful to listen to. He does know a lot of stuff, but Joe Morgan (on the radio) is leagues better.
