Edwards' wife says flap over Cheney's daughter is a GOP feint

The wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards said Monday that Republican criticism of Sen. John Kerry for mentioning Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was a distraction from more pressing issues.

Campaigning in Denver, Elizabeth Edwards also argued that President Bush has tried to politicize the issue of gay rights in pressing for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

``I believe the president has tried to use the constitutional amendment as a wedge issue, instead of addressing things like health care or real reform and attention to our veterans' issues,'' Edwards said.

Mrs. Edwards also said she was upset with the GOP complaints about Kerry's comments in his debate last week with Bush. Republicans have called Kerry remarks inappropriate, and in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, Bush said the statement was ``over the line.''

``I'm distressed that what it did was distract from what should have been a dialogue over issues that should have been raised during the third debate - domestic policy issues like health care and jobs and education,'' Edwards said.

I agree with what you said 100 percent; especially since she stated quite frankly that the reason she had them was to REPLACE her son -- because when he died, they KNEW they'd never have JOY in their life again (never mind she had a living daughter at the time) but they were both convinced there would be no more joy in their lives.

This was the question asked of Bush that supposedly made Mary Cheney "fair game."

Both of you are opposed to gay marriage. But to understand how you have come to that conclusion, I want to ask you a more basic question. Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?

Is she so politically deaf that she doesn't understand it's time for her to STHU?? Or is she one of those people who just will NOT admit when they're wrong, and keep on and on, hoping to wear their opponents down? Sorta' like Kerry.

The funny thing about the way that Kerry answered questions was how he turned each and every one of them into an attack against George Bush. Even the question about Bush's faith and prayer, was turned into an attack by Kerry. Also, Kerry also wanted the last word on everything by stealing a few seconds from each following question to get in one last dig from the previous question.

Based on his performance, I can easily surmise that Kerry was intending his remark to be an attack against Bush and his administration.

During his debate with the vice president, John Edwards said he respected the Cheneys because they are willing to acknowledge they have a lesbian daughter and are willing to embrace her. Cheney thanked Edwards for his comments.

But do words like "$hit" qualify as sarcasm? That word has come up multiple times in this thread ("disguised" as I have done), and that's just one comment I could make.

Humor is an effective way to puncture those who deserve it (aka the Edwardses -- I think we all agree they are tacky people who deserve the criticism). Rush Limbaugh is a master of using humor to make a point.

However, there is a difference between sarcasm/humor and vulgarity, know what I mean? That's the point I'm trying to get across. People can take my idea or leave it, and doubtless many will leave it (grin), but I've been increasingly concerned about some of the language and posts I see here on FR, in general. Perhaps at least a few people will consider whether they can make the same points on a more "highbrow" level.

It would be nice to read posts without being concerned about my kids walking up to talk to me and reading the screen over my shoulder :) :).

I agree. The Dems enjoy watching us slither down to their level, it validates everything they say about us. Isn't it possible to make the point that Elizabeth's comments are outrageous without resorting to the most crude fat jokes? To me, it weakens and dilutes the the point being made against her behavior.

I agree that some Freerepublicers hit the red line. We have a passionate group of contributers and some may fail to use their best wit to express their ideas. Some of them may be like a barometer that can show the feelings people have on the subject. As for me, I tend to ignore their posts to seek comments of a more intellectual level. Those who clutter the bandwidth with off the top remarks will most likely be ignored. Most of us don't have the time for it.

We could spend some time to make comment on them where we find their comments over the red line. That would bring the body politics on the Freerepublic to a higher level than the free for all you find on those left wing web sites.

LOL... if this woman had just kept quiet about this subject there was a very high probability it would have simply blown over. but no... she had to open her yap, and now the sKeerry campaign really has to deal with it. I don't see how they are going to get it quiet in only two weeks, and those who are really aware of it are almost uniformly unhappy with the Demodogs about it.
