Edwards' wife says flap over Cheney's daughter is a GOP feint
Associated Press ^ | October 18, 2004

The wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards said Monday that Republican criticism of Sen. John Kerry for mentioning Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was a distraction from more pressing issues.

Campaigning in Denver, Elizabeth Edwards also argued that President Bush has tried to politicize the issue of gay rights in pressing for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

``I believe the president has tried to use the constitutional amendment as a wedge issue, instead of addressing things like health care or real reform and attention to our veterans' issues,'' Edwards said.

Mrs. Edwards also said she was upset with the GOP complaints about Kerry's comments in his debate last week with Bush. Republicans have called Kerry remarks inappropriate, and in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, Bush said the statement was ``over the line.''

``I'm distressed that what it did was distract from what should have been a dialogue over issues that should have been raised during the third debate - domestic policy issues like health care and jobs and education,'' Edwards said.

I can certainly stand the heat of debate, which is why I'm here and why I made the comment I did.

I merely commented on an extreme lack of class in some of the commentary in this thread -- I was not commenting on the underlying points or Mrs. Cheney's family's choices. If you think all the language and posts in this thread are hunky-dory, that's your prerogative.

For my part, I simply hope that sharing my thoughts might cause some to reconsider the manner in which they share their views. I'd like to think conservatives, and FReepers in particular, have more class than to clutter up these boards with vulgarity.

Best wishes --

I think you're due at Dunkin Donuts for the baker's dozen special.

I have some just for her.

After she's done I'll tell her how I made 'em.

I agree with your post, somewhat. I don't attack folks on their personal appearances, but as soon as she started shooting her mouth off, she became what Kerry's campaign manager, Mary Beth Cahill, said was, what was it? Open season or something like that referring to VP Cheney's daughter. So, if America has an obesity problem, Mrs. Edwards is a poster girl and it's open season on her.

The sensitive, politically correct term for the 21st century is "chunkster." A little empathy, please.

I thought it was "gravitas."

Or, if you practice nuclear medicine, a "graviton source."

The effort in these posts seems to be pointing out the classless ineptitude of the two Johns using Cheney's daughter, Mary to forward their argument about gay marriage. The consensus is that tactic was in the gutter politics pure and simple. For those who play in the gutter politics become fair game for the derision they deserve. The use of sarcasm has been a favorite method to trice up those who place themselves in the target position.

If I were a gay person and voter, I would be highly insulted that Kerry brought this matter up during a Presidential debate, because he mentioned it as something dirty that VP Cheney should be ashamed of. Kerry was sly, but the the meaning was there. Mrs. Cheney was right when she said "he is not a nice man". I think gays and straights caught Kerry for what he is in this instance. It was completely uncalled for.

"Elizabeth Edwards also argued that President Bush has tried to politicize the issue of gay rights in pressing for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage."

Bulls**t!!! The only reason Bush is supporting an amendment is that leftist judges have foisted gay marriage on an unwilling public. If the stupid foreign-born MA judge had done her job (interpret the law, leave the politics & legislating to others), Bush wouldn't even be talking about it. Conservatives are not culpable for addressing an issue that liberals created.

Well, Mrs. Edwards, it wasn't Bush and Cheney who raised it. So shut up and eat some more bon bons!

And stupid Liz fell for it!

Mary Cheney was brought up in the VP debate, and is very visible as part of the campaign team.

Are ALL of your posts this inaccurate?

John Edwards brought her up, nobody else.

And she is NOT a very visible part of the campaign.
