The wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards said Monday that Republican criticism of Sen. John Kerry for mentioning Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was a distraction from more pressing issues.
Campaigning in Denver, Elizabeth Edwards also argued that President Bush has tried to politicize the issue of gay rights in pressing for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
``I believe the president has tried to use the constitutional amendment as a wedge issue, instead of addressing things like health care or real reform and attention to our veterans' issues,'' Edwards said.
Mrs. Edwards also said she was upset with the GOP complaints about Kerry's comments in his debate last week with Bush. Republicans have called Kerry remarks inappropriate, and in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, Bush said the statement was ``over the line.''
``I'm distressed that what it did was distract from what should have been a dialogue over issues that should have been raised during the third debate - domestic policy issues like health care and jobs and education,'' Edwards said.

Classic. They are the victims....
Right, Liz, the Cheneys are trying to make political hay over remarks your husband and Kerry made purely for politics. Uh-huh.
I think you're due at Dunkin Donuts for the baker's dozen special.
I think we know her answer.
I heard she's got a bumper sticker that says honk if you've got doughnuts.
This is part of the Democrats secret "plan" to make TeRAYza look good.
Hag.
What I keep wondering is how can she talk so much, while obviously stuffing her mouth with a Wendy's double cheese and super size fries, all of the time?
I didn't like what Mrs. Edwards said at *all*, but gee whiz, I'd hope conservatives could be classier in expressing their anger than some of what I've read here today. I feel like I'm at DU :(.
I think Elizabeth Edwards overreacted to this and treated it as if it's shameful to have this discussion. I think that's a very sad state of affairs. I think that it indicates a certain amount of shame with respect to her moronic statement about one of the Cheney daughters.
Liz, we can't hear you. I think it's that big foot in your mouth.
But her brain sure is screwed-up.
She's on THEIR side. It's two weeks to the election. And you guys tell her to shut up.
Who do you guys support, anyway?
I know Mary's neighbor. Folks in her area are very protective of her and her anonymity.
Folks out there are also well-armed.
'Nuff said to the DemonRat fools.
Sow.
I'm appalled that the children of candidates should be brought into the campaign at all, unless they are actively campaigning for their parent. However, to bring in their sexual preferences or any personal information is totally unacceptable in my opinion.
As for making her children the subject of debate, WHAT IF her kids were not-so-bright and Cheney or Bush said, "I'm sure it must be painful to have to send your children to school on the short bus, Senator. Those window-lickers can't help how they are and deserve our support."
Would she "feint"?
Every poll and focus group said that 2/3 or more of the people who saw it thought that Kerry's remark was over the line. Now comes the lovely and talented Mrs. Edwards to tell all those people that they are victims of a "Republican feint." No they aren't. They are people who saw it with their own eyes and made their own judgements about how apppropriate it was. Doesn't she understand that she's insulting 2/3 of the people by telling them that they can't make up their own minds? |
Umm. This is the second time she's opened her big trap enabling the opposition to "distract" from the "dialogue". I'd call that stupid, at the very least.
