Edwards' wife says flap over Cheney's daughter is a GOP feint
Associated Press ^ | October 18, 2004

Posted on 10/18/2004 2:12:05 PM PDT by wallcrawlr

The wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards said Monday that Republican criticism of Sen. John Kerry for mentioning Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was a distraction from more pressing issues.

Campaigning in Denver, Elizabeth Edwards also argued that President Bush has tried to politicize the issue of gay rights in pressing for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

``I believe the president has tried to use the constitutional amendment as a wedge issue, instead of addressing things like health care or real reform and attention to our veterans' issues,'' Edwards said.

Mrs. Edwards also said she was upset with the GOP complaints about Kerry's comments in his debate last week with Bush. Republicans have called Kerry remarks inappropriate, and in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, Bush said the statement was ``over the line.''

``I'm distressed that what it did was distract from what should have been a dialogue over issues that should have been raised during the third debate - domestic policy issues like health care and jobs and education,'' Edwards said.

THIS JUST IN FROM CBS NEWS:

Today, the GOP made obesity in America a campaign issue. Kerry Campaign adviser, Mary Beth Cahill, is denying rumors that Elizabeth Edwards is fair game.

Details later tonight.

Kerry's comment was totally uncalled for, and did not answer the question asked. Could Kerry have answered the question differently without bringing up an individuals name. Absolutely.

Her statement provides real insight as to who she is. She is projecting on to the Cheneys how SHE would feel if SHE had a gay daughter.

I don't get a real kick out of all these weight jokes, but I find it quite amusing that the gay voters will be pissed as hell about this.

I think he meant "stupid" in the sense of what is appropriate and what is not.

BTW, I don't think "feint" is the exotic word you seem to think it is.

Digs?

Not at all, the vp should have responded in spades if he felt the edwards response was out of line.

He didn't.

Elizabeth Edwards has just demonstrated that she is a shallow and bigoted person, just like her husband. Never in American history can it be shown that anyone was elected President, or defeated for President, because of the quality (or lack of quality) of his Vice Presidential candidate.

As weak as Edwards is -- take away the hairdo and the suit and what is left? -- he will almost certainly not be the cause of Kerry's defeat. That goes squared for the wife of the Veep nominee. Her only usefulness, such as it is, is a demonstration that her husband is a lightweight for having such a lightweight (metaphorically speaking) wife, and lacking the brains to tell her to sit down and shut up.

I try to teach my medical residents that terms such as fat, obese, blimp, beached whale, lard rump, porker, etc. can be dispiritng to a portion of hte population. The sensitive, politically correct term for the 21st century is "chunkster." A little empathy, please.

I know several thin women who've had 2-3 children and lost all the weight afterwards (including me!)--all it takes is moving around a bit (I walk 40 min 4x/week) and not eating lots of snacks or after dinner. . . maybe the difference is that we are not angry. . .

Although I will be angry if Kerry wins despite "Lesbogate."

Nice way for her to distract the flap about the flap around her girth.

I don't get a real kick out of the weight jokes either, but am trying to make a point about how inappropriate Kerry and Edward's statements were.

As Novak or Safire reported today, probably a miniscule number of voters knew that Mary Cheney is gay. The debates changed all that.

Considering that most people don't even know who their Senator is, it's pretty safe to say that most people don't pay attention to the minutia of politics the way most of us do. Kerry/Edwards made sure to change that and that it's backfiring on them is delicious.

John Kerry is not going to win this election. Soon, John Kerry wont be able to win an election for dog catcher. I predict he will leave the Senate as well.

I'm p o ed at her too for her rude comments but I really get tired of the fat jokes. She lost a child and some people (moi) deal with tragedy by eating too much. She then had a late in life baby and trust me, I still have the babyfat from my youngest and he's 24 years old. So there!
