The wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards said Monday that Republican criticism of Sen. John Kerry for mentioning Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was a distraction from more pressing issues.
Campaigning in Denver, Elizabeth Edwards also argued that President Bush has tried to politicize the issue of gay rights in pressing for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
``I believe the president has tried to use the constitutional amendment as a wedge issue, instead of addressing things like health care or real reform and attention to our veterans' issues,'' Edwards said.
Mrs. Edwards also said she was upset with the GOP complaints about Kerry's comments in his debate last week with Bush. Republicans have called Kerry remarks inappropriate, and in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, Bush said the statement was ``over the line.''
``I'm distressed that what it did was distract from what should have been a dialogue over issues that should have been raised during the third debate - domestic policy issues like health care and jobs and education,'' Edwards said.

She's a soul-less, blood-sucking attorney who has somehow been bred to another soul-less, blood-sucking attorney. I have no use for any of their demonic species.
I disagree. The question put to Kerry was: "Is homosexuality a choice?"
The problem with Kerrys answer is that instead of telling us what he thought, he brought up Mary Cheneys name presuming to know what she thought and how she felt, and used her as his answer.
Lynn Cheney was right. Kerry is not a very nice man. And, he still hasn't answered the question.
One burger in her mouth isn't going to cut it. It will take about 6.
The question wasn't about same-sex marriage. It was about whether homosexuality is biological or environmental. Mary Cheney isn't "heavily involved" in the campaign, having a job and a life and all. She's a bit less "heavily involved" than the Kerry girls.
However, the explanation from Kedwards campaign that the reference was meant as a compliment is incredulous, don't you agree?
That woman shouldn't even be allowed to sniff the White House, much less get to come in through the front door. And that goes double for Teeerayzzza.
Elizabeth Edwards is a southern version of Hillary Clinton. John Edwards was a conservative until he met Liz in law school. Liz was as far left as you can get and in typical southern fashion, the women dominate the man. Her views became his views and it continues to this day. This is common knowledge in North Carolina. We are so amazed that o'l John has made it this far.
She seems like a real FAT classLESS act.
There now, that fits
don't know, I don't think Ms. Edwards could fit in Hilary's clothes - Hilary's not small, but Mrs. E is a porker. HA!!!!!!!!!
Seriously though, the last thing this country needs is another Hilary - we need to make sure she and her faith-healer husband go back to N. Carolina so he can try to channel some more unborn babies for big $$$$$$$$$$$.
She has been hanging around with Mrs. Kerry too much. All those big words and stuff, hehe.
"It will take about 6"....................True. I am still wondering what(who) prompted the moderator to ask such a question in such a way to give Kerry the opportunity to reply with the dig at Chaney. Well, not really wondering but thought it was a little obvious.
Why didn't Bob Schieffer ask that question during the debate?
Someone told me once, that inside every beautiful babe is a fat girl waiting to get out, and fatness is triggered by a combination of wedding rings, anger and pregnancy.
Ever since, I cannot watch a woman eat sweets without smiling. If she attacks her cakes candies and pies too aggressively, I know its over. Law school taught John Edwards what would happen to him if he ever thought of leaving that heifer, but oh, what a surfer he must be to ride those waves....
A observation about Mrs. Edwards: After the tragic death of her teenage son she had two children. They are now about five and three. The need for these children is understandable. What is not understandable is why she now regularly leaves these children to campaign. She spends her time, rather than caring for her own, criticizing those who have questioned both her husband's and Kerry's specific mentioning of Vice President Cheney's daughter. Her behavior is quite aberrant, although typical of too many in our society. My comments may be viewed by some, using the liberal spin, as mean spirited. However, she had the children and should now (especially as she is wealthy enough) spend her time with them and stop playing at politics. She already is a failure at politics. And may soon become a failure at being a mother.
