TIME: Edwards Under Fire - GOP Groups to Unleash Assualt Against Former Trial Lawyer

A new wave of Republican attack ads is coming this week, but this time their target is the No. 2 man on the Democratic ticket, John Edwards. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the November Fund, a new 527 group dedicated to attacking Edwards, a former plaintiffs' lawyer, and "lawsuit abuse," will this week launch an ad campaign that portrays him as a cause of the crisis in the medical system. "Doctors are leaving, hospitals are closing, health care costs are skyrocketing at an alarming rate," says one direct-mail piece. "Tell Senator Kerry and Senator Edwards that it is time to support common sense lawsuit abuse reform." The Chamber is focusing on eight battleground states with a "very aggressive mail, phone and internet campaign," says its national political director Bill Miller. The campaign is aimed at independent women with children, who are presumed to be more receptive to health care issues. Miller declined to say how much it will spend other than "in the millions."

Yeah, but John Kerry and John Edwards say that only accounts for 1% of the problem. They wouldn't lie to us, right?

Right?

In the tautology of Time...all Republican ads are "attack" but all Democrat ads are "truth".

Love it!!! One of the best zingers from last night was when President Bush said of Sen. Kerry (not exact quote) "if he was so in favor of tort reform, he could have showed up and voted for it!"

Anybody ever heard the phrase,

just the tip of the iceberg?

Kerry is always prepared. He will tell us the truth before he tell us the lie.

"In the tautology of Time...all Republican ads are "attack" but all Democrat ads are "truth"."

I was just reminded of this the other day in a Dr.'s office...I couldn't even read that trash. I threw it down and picked up a month old ESPN mag.

Good, the issue of lawsuit abuse can be Edwards' Halliburton.

John Edwards will be on MTP tomorrow. I guess he will be on defense. He must think he needs to get out ahead of the story.

I'm glad to hear of this.

There are some DEM voters out there living under the delusion Edwards would have been a better choice for the ticket. Time to let them know who Edwards really is, and how he has harmed the medical industry. I know in WA doctors have gotten together to launch a campaign this year about lawsuits forcing them out of business because they cannot afford the insurance.

How can we find out a list of the cases in which he has appeared and what the results were?

ohn Kerry and John Edwards say that only accounts for 1% of the problem

In his debate with Cheney, Edwards said it was only "half of 1 percent of health-care costs in this country -- half of 1 percent."

My, my, how inconvenient that Kerry reminded us all last night that he's a lawyer, too!

Malpractice insurance for an OB/GYN runs something like $100k/year. An office might gross something $1-2 million/year, in which case malpractice insurance premiums account for 5-10% of the overhead costs.

So while it's a lot, malpractice probably isn't the main cost driver in medical care. There are two things that probably drive costs a lot harder: new technology (equipment and drugs), and government involvement via Medicade and Medicare.

My wife is 19 weeks pregnant. She is considered "high risk" for number of factors. Her OBGYN told her she cannot deliver our baby because she can no longer afford the insurance premium. Insurance companies and doctors here in New Jersey all say the lawsuits are out of control! We had to find another doctor to take over her care!
Last week I had to take my wife to the ER for a severe sinus infection. ER doc told me his insurance in three years went from $17,000 to $56,000 and he has no suits/judgements against him-- ever! TRIAL LAWYERS SUCK! They own the Demorats lock, stock and barrel.
