Lakewood, Ohio – September 30, 2004 – Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s voter support is eroding according to a poll recently conducted by Wirthlin Worldwide of Reston, Virginia. His Republican challenger, Edward F. Herman, significantly boosted his name identification and voter support over the past two months.
Among voters who have heard of both Ed Herman and Dennis Kucinich the ballot is 44% Ed Herman, 48% Dennis Kucinich, 4% Barbara Ferris (Independent) and 4% undecided.
“This result shows that as voters become more aware of Ed Herman as a credible challenger, he has the ability to substantially increase his ballot standing and make this a competitive race, even with a third party candidate,” said William Dalbec, Senior Research Executive and Political Consultancy Leader, of Wirthlin Worldwide, a leading opinion research firm.
Herman tripled his name recognition among Independents and Democrats and nearly doubled it among Republicans. Ed was known by only 15% of likely voters in July and now 36% are familiar with his name. “Rep. Kucinich has experienced weakening of support in the two months since we last completed a survey,” said Dalbec. “Over the course of our work in the district, his re-elect has declined from 61% to 54%.”

Surprisingly, some of the regions where Rep. Kucinich’s voter support falls below 50% include Parma, Parma Heights, Brooklyn Heights, Middleburg Heights, Brooklyn, Brookpark, Cuyahoga Heights, Garfield Heights, Newburgh Heights and Valley View. These areas, politically categorized as “Reagan Democrat,” have strongly supported Rep. Kucinich in the past.
The survey of likely 2004 voters in the 10th congressional district was conducted during the evening hours on September 26-27, 2004. The sample of voters has a margin of error of +/- 5.7%. The poll was paid for by the Ed Herman for Congress Campaign.
“I’m proud of our campaign’s positive developments,” said Herman. “We are working hard to deliver the 10th district a full-time congressman who can help solve the challenges of Northeast Ohio.”

"I can't, for the life of me, understand why I'm the only one who's taking this position with such emphasis,'' Kucinich said following a speech and question-and-answer session at the Palace Hotel sponsored by the Bar Association of San Francisco. "We have to be courageous in protecting people's rights ... and I don't think people should expect any less from a president.''

Over a long political career, Kucinich maintained a near perfect pro-life voting record. As recently as last May, Kucinich press secretary, Kathie Scarrah, stated: "He absolutely believes in the sanctity of life and that life begins at conception." Then Kucinich began to think about running for President. It was time for some soup.
Less than a week after announcing his decision to explore the possibility of running for president, Kucinich wrote a letter to his local newspaper, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, wherein he publicly renounced his long held pro-life position: "I don't believe in abortion; few do. I do, however, believe in choice." In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Kucinich goes even further; not ruling out his support for publicly funded free abortions for poor women. "I am going to continue to take a thoughtful approach, and that doesn't preclude the poor from having the government support their right to choose." Amazingly, Kucinich has been trying to make the argument that his position on this fundamental issue has not really changed. "The position I'm taking now is an expansion; it's not a reversal," Kucinich told Tim Russert on Meet the Press.
So let's get this straight. Less than a year ago, Kucinich believed that life begins at conception and that this unborn life is sacred. Now that he is running for president, Kucinich believes that the 51% of Americans who believe that abortion is homicide should be compelled to pay for free abortions for poor women. So much for "choice," Americans, you are going to pay for other people's free abortions even if you think they are committing homicide.

I think that Dennis's Don Quixote presidential run did not sit well with some of the Reagan Democrats in his district.
National Review Online speculated that it would have that effect in July of this year.
Parma is the key to watch on election night. If Dennis can't get a majority in Parma, Herman might just pull off the upset.
You are totally right. If Ed wins Parma it is all over. Parma is the Reagan-Dem area (very union but socially conservative, lots of Catholics and Eastern Orthodox). And Dennis's switch to the dark side over social issues will be is undoing if he loses.

While Id love for him to lose, this statement doesnt give me mcuh confidence. It begs the question how many people have heard of both candidates.
Everyone knows Dennis. Ed Herman is increasing his name recognition by leaps and bounds but it's not where it needs to be....yet. 30 days to go!
Kook's re-elect is down to 54% and his unfavorable is up to 39% (which amazes me, that it's not higher). More work is needed but the trend is good.

Dennis has always presented himself as a populist, for the little guy against large vested interests. This was the basis for his actions as mayor which drove Cleveland into default on its credit obligations.
He is quick to show up when there is some kind of protest, especially about a plant closing, a hospital closing, that sort of thing.
He never actually does anything but he plays on the show of solidarity. Goes over well with the ignorant elements of the lower middle class who do tend to expect a raw deal and where vestiges of class envy still smolder.
With his flipflop on abortion and his overt anti-war posture, he has come out of the closet, and many of his supporters at home are aghast at what they see.
Not that they didn't have ample notice, beforehand, if they'd paid attention, but hey somebody has to watch "Wheel of Fortune"
