NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

YEah, Newstewak is good -- I don't trust any of these pollsters really, so for them to give an artificial lead to Bush before the debate and then have it magically vaporize after is not that far out.

However, I seriously doubt they would EVER give Bush an artificial lead. That is just more than a committed lefty could bring herself to do. So, any poll showing the President with a lead I take to be understated, and any poll showing CAIRy with a lead I take to be overstated.

But he's now going to be on Kerry's turf with domestic issues for the next two debates.

You don't think there will be any foreign policy questions from the next debate, in town hall format? I do.

Also in the internals: 60% said they knew "a lot" about what Bush stands for, only 37% ( or 32% - I'm going on memory here ) knew "a lot" about what Kerry stands for......I think this internal is very revealing. Who ARE these people that don't know about Kerry? This reminds me of the polls taken immediately after the Dem primary that had Kerry leading....and the exact same internal ( almost the same numbers ) showed up. Bush began to pull away as the public became "educated" about Kerry. I guess these folks have been living in a cave since January,

Also shows that there is plenty of room for the right kind of ad bombardment in the last two weeks.

Aha, as usual, Newsweek is using "registered voters," which always overstates the Democrat's totals on all questions.

Democracy Corps Poll has Bush up by two points.
http://www.democracycorps.com/reports/surveys/Democracy_Corps_September_30_2004_1st_Debate_Survey.pdf

CNN/Gallup poll shows no change after 1st Debate.

What if the Newsweek poll is nothing but propaganda? Like the Harris poll at the start of Sept that claimed "Bush's convention bounch is gone"? Funny how the bad new for Bush polls are treated as gospel by a certain sect of Freepers and the ones that show bad new for Kerry are "suspicous" Why is that?

My post didn't mention the polls. I simply expressed my impressions of the debate. I think those impressions are pretty accurate.

I have a grip thank you -- on reality. Let's face facts and stop deluding ourselves here. Bush has left himself open for slaughter and repeating the same tired lines at pep rallies isn't going to work. He's preaching to the choir at these events. It's not his base he needs to worry about.

Bush has let himself get boxed-in with his only option left is to come out swinging which the media will spin as to aggressive.

I'm sure Bush will do better in the next debate because he couldn't do any worse. If Bush and company knows where OBL is they better send all the troops to capture him as that is about the only thing left which will change the focus of this race.

You know, I always used to be one of the first to welcome newbies on a thread , but these last few days I don't even want to read anyone's posts who signed up at the time of the debate. I'm not "feeling the trust", if you know what I mean.

I love how this poll must have started as soon as the debates ended and finished Saturday morning. Smells like the typical Newsweak crap. I also bet they went back to oversampling Democrats again.
