NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

And so it begins. We all expected this. Kerry wins debate, Kerry is presidental, Kerry is winning in the polls. Kerry loses the election, end of story.

Yup!

We have Bush to thank for this one. He could have finished Kerry the other night.
Instead we now have giddy Eleanor Clift, Terry McAuliffe and the hordes of democrats on the attack.
Bush left us with this mess. We now have to do whatever we can for what will probably be only a close win instead of a complete rout of the entire democrat establishment.
Another fine mess Bush has gotten us into.

Here's today's ray of hope!

I don't put much faith in polls. I guess there are a few fencesetters that jump side to side, but I am not one of them. I was for President Bush before the debate and I will be for President Bush after the debates. I figure the Kerry people feel the same way. Besides President Bush did very well in the debate, so why should Kerry be catching up?

Sorry about the repetitive post, but this is Newsweek creating news. Check Rasmussen. Says Bush lead still looks good.

Sure it did. Just like the Newsweek Poll in 200 showed Gore up 15 points after the Democratic Convention.

See this?

If this is victory, it sure is going to be ugly when Kerry loses a debate.

Kerry Wins? Maybe Not.
The conventional wisdom is that John Kerry "won" the debate. We certainly agree that he performed well. In contrast with his hapless recent efforts at the convention and on the stump, he came across as poised, confident and even reasonably disciplined verbally. And he toned down the defeatism on Iraq.

But in a postdebate Gallup poll, although a majority (53%) thought Kerry "did a better job in the debate" than Bush (37%), the results of more specific questions look better for the president:

Kerry Bush
Expressed himself more clearly 60% 32%
Had a good understanding of the issues 41% 41%
Agreed with you more on the issues you care about 46% 49%
Was more believable 45% 50%
Was more likable 41% 48%
Demonstrated he is tough enough for the job 37% 54%

It may turn out that Kerry impressed voters with his skills as a debater--looking "almost senatorial," as ScrappleFace.com puts it-- but fell short of persuading them that he'd be a better president than the incumbent.

Where do you get your numbers from

The same place all the other enemy propgandists do.

Post first presidential debate polls in 2000 showed Al Gore leading George W. Bush by a range of percentage points from 3% to 12%.

Make no mistake about it, a vote for Kerry is a vote for the terrorists.

Remember, overpolling Democrats could make the poll seem closer.

It could be a deliberate MSM attempt to give a bounce to Kerry.

If I remember correctly, Newsweak was oversampling Republicans in their polls since the RNC. Many predicted they would then go back to their usual oversampling of Democrats in order to claim "Kerry is surging" or that "Kerry is the comeback kid".

hate to say it but you could be right.

no incumbent leding the last week of Seotember has ever lost. And I dont think any incumbent who was leading ever lost because of debates.
