Quite willing to bet that IBM has at least one in it's museum. When I worked at DEC they had a PDP-1 on display.
Most companies have museums to help maintain the corporate culture.

I'm thinking those suspenders of his are going to be used for a purpose other than to hold up his pants. Please, if you see Dan, keep him away from rooms with exposed beams...

This guy Glennon does point to what was theoretically possible.

Putting this in the perspective that this guy is a) enjoying his 15 minutes of fame, b) is only a typewriter mechanic and c) Fox has put on actual document analysts who have said these docs are forgeries - the jig is AFAIAC ...

Is there a comprehensive list of advertisers and their products for 60 minutes?

Man, I haven't watched network television for over 20 years...But you are right. Every sponsor at CBS needs to know that their advertising dollars are being thoroughly wasted if they spend it there.

There MUST be some way to hold CBS accountable for this,I can't believe the medi can have the power to indiscriminately lie about elected officials with no repercussions.

WE are the repercussions; CBS is having its reputation trashed.

There must be some department in the government in a position to investigate or sue? the media can sue officials for all kinds of things-information under the "Freedom of Information Act",for instance. Is there no accountability or system of OUTSIDE checks-and-balances for the media? Or are they some rogue fourth branch of "government"?

You're beginning to scare me. The first amendment guarantees the right to say any damn fool thing you want. You can lie your a$$ off on TV. If your lie damages someone, that someone can sue for the damages. That is the only recourse, and should be the only recourse. Inviting the government to impose itself on political disputes like this one is dangerous. It's bad enough that McCain/Feingold is telling us when certain things can and can't be said outside the news media. Now you want the politicians to dictate what the media can say, too?

IBM,

I find your silence on the CBS memo forgery / IBM typewriter matter to be very troubling to say the least.

You are in a position to help your country by putting to rest ONE WAY or ANOTHER, whether or not the memo's could or could not have been made using your STANDARD equipment of the time and you are CHOOSING to remain silent.

This is not right... it's your Civic DUTY to clear this up for the good of America and if you DON'T, you will surely pay for it in lost sales.

I have ordered over five hundred IBM PC's over the years and I GUARANTEE YOU, if these memos are proven forgeries WITHOUT YOUR HELP, I will NEVER, EVER... buy ANYTHING from IBM EVER AGAIN!!! I will also go out of my way do see that other IT managers I know never buy anything from you again either.

This is too important to play political games with. It's up to you to do the right thing and DO YOUR DUTY.

Actually, their assignment is to convince me otherwise. (Well, CBS in particular, since they're the ones standing by this nonsense.) They have not. Unless/until they do, not much more need be said.

WIth all due respect, without feedback from you, the informed and discerning viewer, a) no stink is raised and b) no 'feedback' is applied to *their* processes (accountability in reporting the 'news', their fact-checking, etc.) ...

'course, choosing alternatives like FNC delivers this message too.

I think we need to start a boycott of products and services. I remember how Heinz was hurting just by association to Tahrarayza. What was it, 15% loss in sales?

I don't know anything about FCC rules, or about Network responsibility, but I'm willing to bet there is a joining of the two somewhere, don't you think? This story is exactly where the media has been headed for the past 30 years or so. They have been pushing and pushing the envelope. This story exposes the Big 3 news organizations for what they are, which is far from what I'd be willing to bet their charter requires. So much of the vitriol in political and public discourse today can be laid at the feet of these propagandists who have used a Chinese-water-torture approach to dulling the political sense of Americans to the point where these monolithic beasts feel it is their duty and obligation to filter our news, tell us what is important in the world, shade and distort stories to accommodate a particular (and left-ward) ideology. The mind-numbed, knowing no better, feel a sense of outrage when someone thinks it could be any different from what Dan, or Tom, or Peter have told them it must be.

You are right, we don't want government infringing on free speech. But we also don't want arrogant demagogues ruling our (yes, OUR) airwaves and foisting on us the narrowness that is their opinion.

No I don't want the government to dictate what the media can say,but surely there can be some balance so that they can't ouright lie in the face of all contrary evidence with impunity? The media has the power to affect elections in this country, and THAT'S scary too,if they can't be held accountable in some balanced way for their words, when they're outright lies.

You are right of course. They are not going to get any feedback from me about their shenanigans. Of course, that would be rather difficult for me to do, because I don't currently watch much CBS to speak of in the first place :-)

All that I am saying here is that they have failed to present a convincing case for the accuracy of the memos in question and no one is required to take them on faith. Quite the opposite in fact, the onus is on CBS to document that the things they have presented as news are in fact true. They have not in this case, and I am pointing that out to any who will listen, and there's not much more than that which I can do. Best,

if you really want to get the attention of cbs, here is how to do it.

write a nice letter to the general manager of your local cbs affiliate. explain that you have determined that falsehoods included in cbs network news programs broadcast by the station are not in the public interest.. explain that you believe that this is something that should be taken into consideration when their license comes up for renewal. close the letter by saying that you therefore request that this letter be placed in the station's public file.

these are powerful code words. "not in the public interest" is the grounds for challenging a license. the "public file" is a file of consumer comments which the station by law must maintain. it is provided to and inspected by the f.c.c.

if you want to be really mean cc the letter to:

Federal Communications Commission
Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau
Consumer Complaints
445 12th Street, SW
Washington, D.C. 20554

believe me, enough of these and cbs will hear about it bigtime. angry affils are the last thing a network wants.

Unfortunately, you're right. Nothing will come of this. And America is the looser.

Nothing will come of this re: the election. This does not move the needle. I am still hopeful about Bush.

Also, this is probably the end of the story as it exposes CBS' bias. I still think they have poisoned themselves. It's like the New York Times and the Catholic Church after their scandals: still standing, not quite the same.
