www.freerepublic.com ^ | Howlin

Howlin started a Live Thread September 10, 2004 to see what Dan would say. He told us his report was the facts and nothing but the facts.

Well, it is now Monday, the 13th. What will Dan say today?

Wow. I hadnt heard that.

"CBS is in s-o-o-o-o-o SERIES trouble! :)"

You know what's funny - SeeBS has stooped to using internet resources to attempt to 'explain' how this could be done w/o resorting to MS Word in 1972 - I think that's how they stumbled on this 'Bill Glennon' guy ...

Yep. No real expert in the field would agree to Rather's premise.

The best part of that was when Fred Barnes pointed out that the typewriter that Dannyboy claims would have existed back then would have cost...in today's dollars...the equal amount of 15000 to 20000 bucks.

The machine he's talking about CAN do the individual items that are seen in the memos. But it CAN NOT duplicate them image perfect. It's been tried already.

While MS Word DOES create image perfect copies.

That's what riled me so much...it all looked good to the rube who is sitting on his couch only half aware of what's going on (and convinced that Kerry is some kind of war hero--did you see the Viet Nam Vets against Kerry yesterday on CSPAN?) But much of the argument against the documents and the Barnes interview was not addressed.

the other ridiculous statement is that with modern software it is impossible to use a lowercase l in place of a 1.

Bill Glennon, a technology consultant in New York who worked for I.B.M. in Midtown Manhattan for 14 years and repaired typewriters throughout that time, said that the Executive had proportional spacing and that its typebar could be fitted with superscript characters.

One thing, though.

What could have happened is irrelevant. The only relevant matter is what DID happen - and I believe it proven that somebody typed these memos in MSWord.

Does anyone remember what aircraft the Alabama ANG was flying at the time? I'm getting ready to send a "nasty" to Mara.

I don't know, but it wasn't F-102s. Bush was not going to be re-trained in new aircraft so it didn't matter. That's why he didn't get a physical. Didn't need one.

I thought I read somewhere this morning (I think it was at National Review--the Kerry Spot) that the font was being used way back even before the 60's (in manufacturing printed materials--or something along those lines), though not available for use in the context that was available to the Guard.

Were all typewriters rounded up and destroyed in the 80s?

I'm tired of hearing how it "could" have been done, Dan. Produce the damn machine, tell us the model number, type the memos on it, scan them and put them on the web for comparison. OR, failing that, shut your mouth.

I know it was used in books, presumably properly licensed. Since typewriters (even the Composer) couldn't handle it technically, I doubt the question of licensing it to typewriter manufacturers ever arose.

Precisely, this is the ONLY way to prove it.

You should read the surprising CBS online article referred to in:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1215022/posts

It quotes all the expert naysayers from various MSM and CBS defence in one article. Maybe others in CBS are starting to see the light?

Or feeling the heat. I went to the CBS website just to make sure this was on the level. Sure looks like they're keeping the option open to throw Dan overboard.

I got news for everybody, I was in the NG from '72 to '78 and everything we got was regular army hand-me-downs. Most of our office equipment was Korean war vintage. I'll one up you on that one. I was a personnel clerk in the AF Reserve stationed at Ellington AFB a block from the TANG Headquarters. We had no electric typewriters. None. I typed re-assignment, discharge and promotion orders all day long on a manual typewriter. The TANG got our hand-me-downs. I guarantee they did not have an electric typewriter, much less a 4,000 piece of equipment.
