General Staudt was retired!
Powerline ^ | Sept 9 2004 | Big Trunk

Posted on 09/09/2004 4:34:07 PM PDT by Dog

UPDATE 12: In the August 18, 1973 memo "discovered" by 60 Minutes, Jerry Killian purportedly writes:

Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges more about Bush. I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job. But wait! Reader Amar Sarwal points out that General Staudt, who thought very highly of Lt. Bush, retired in 1972.

The more I look at these "memos," the more obvious it appears that they are inept forgeries.

Jen, that would be great, if true. The problem is that the media spin is so well tuned that they may get away with it again. Remember Slick Willie? Slick as snot on a glass doorknob? Sorry for the graphic, but even when we really believed he had his a$$ in a crack "this time" he would manage to get away with it.

Here's the problem as I see it. The constituency of the democrats are the people who are really struggling to keep their lives together. They work hard all day and go home to work hard until bed time. They don't take the time, or have the time, to read the papers. It is easier to listen to the MSM. They are being pounded with spin. The get animated in their discussions about politics but they can't explain why anything they say is right. They just believe it is true because they have heard it from so many places! Spin. spin. spin. Basically not well educated about the issues, they know only that they are at risk if they allow the Republicans to run their lives. They don't realize that their hardships are the direct result of the actions of those they are looking at to save them. They don't know that the success of the democrat machinery depends on keeping the hard working masses uneducated, overworked and pigeon holed.

Pretty pathetic. The National News Media isn't going to go down any time soon, imo. We just have to keep pushing the message and challenging the spin.

Absolutely the ONLY possiblility is an IBM Selectric. However, I never saaw one with a Times Roman ball. Standard was Courier, some offices had Italic, and if you were really lucky you had one called Primary (or something like that) that made a large print that you could use for headlines. Nothing was proportional and you certainly couldn't make a superscript unless you rolled the platen up halfway and then it would never be even with the next time you made a superscript unless you were a crack typist.

Each ball was quite expensive in 1972 becaue I dropped one and broke it when I was working for the Boy Scouts. I didn't get my pay docked, but I was pretty worried for a while. I can't imagine a government office investing in special balls beyond italic.

thanks, someone else looked up the history of the IBM selectrics
from early 70's and it said there was no superscripts at that time, except
for possibly a VERY EXPENSIVE typesetter, which
would never have been purchased for a national guard office.

Deserves another ping.

Not everyone has heard that the General referred to in one of the memos was retired. CBS will not address this issue.

Nor the fact that Col. Killian couldn't type according to his widow. Younger Freepers may not realize how many people did not type back then.

I still have to hunt and peck and I'm a software engineer. I didn't take it up until my college years and my slow fingers could never get the hang of it.

Absolutely.....you got that right!

I was feeling a little depressed tonight after Dan Blather's attempt to cover-up what happened, but I'm not now. I have a firm belief that something else is going to drop on him and the rest of the bunch pushing this phony story and that it will be even worse for them than yesterday's fiasco.

Yesterday the expert on dung, Harkin crawled out from under his special place and got hit in the face. McAwful and Begala, same thing. They have been plotting this for months I believe, starting with Michael Moore calling Bush AWOL.

I learned something today I didn't know, GW volunteered twice to go to Vietnam, have you ever heard that before? I heard it in an interview conductec by Judge Napolitano on the John Gibson show.

Back to the news media. They are losing in newspaper subscriptions and in viewers. People do get their news from them but that audience is lower every day.

Jen

What continues to amaze me is the fact that I read an article right after the charges began (about the phony docs). The article said that the Kerry campaign had the 4 documents for 6 weeks prior to releasing them to Dan Rather. It said the Kerry campaign did not believe they were legitimate so they thought the media could vet them better. Oh, sure!! Right!!!

But where is that information today? You aren't hearing anything about the Kerry campaign being the source of the documents today! The media sucks! They are self-serving and dishonest and somehow we have to pull the sheets off them once and for all.

I don't think whatever symbol is being printed can extend very much above the top of line due to the mechanics of a typewriter

Years ago you could get special symbols for regular typewriters, IBM Executives and IBM Selectrics. The symbols included the th. If you look closely you can see the th doesn't go any higher than the " sign or the ' or the ^.

Yes, fun until you have to listen until the way the other side spins it. I don't know how they live with themselves.

I heard that too.....and I wondered why doesn't the WH just come out & say that....but then I realized that GWB doesn't BRAG like Kerry....GWB has more character and class!

In the Fifties almost all my relatives were Democrats and the D Party did a lot to help the working people.
An aunt of Mine even was able to use her influence to get my wife and I an apartment.
My Mother in law was an avowed Democrat all her life because they helped her throughout the depression era.

Unfortunately they have become the party of Special Interest groups of ALL kinds and a haven for Socialists , Whackos and communists.
It's really very sad, because they were a proud advocate for the working class people who needed an advocate.

Now they appear in shambles.
