New Questions On Bush Guard Duty

CBS) The military records of the two men running for president have become part of the political arsenal in this campaign – a tool for building up, or blowing up, each candidate’s credibility as America's next commander-in-chief.

While Sen. Kerry has been targeted for what he did in Vietnam, President Bush has been criticized for avoiding Vietnam by landing a spot in the Texas Air National Guard - and then failing to meet some of his obligations.

Did then-Lt. Bush fulfill all of his military obligations? And just how did he land that spot in the National Guard in the first place? Correspondent Dan Rather has new information on the president’s military service – and the first-ever interview with the man who says he pulled strings to get young George W. Bush into the Texas Air National Guard.

...

But 60 Minutes has obtained a number of documents we are told were taken from Col. Killian's personal file. Among them, a never-before-seen memorandum from May 1972, where Killian writes that Lt. Bush called him to talk about "how he can get out of coming to drill from now through November."

Lt. Bush tells his commander "he is working on a campaign in Alabama…. and may not have time to take his physical." Killian adds that he thinks Lt. Bush has gone over his head, and is "talking to someone upstairs."

Col. Killian died in 1984. 60 Minutes consulted a handwriting analyst and document expert who believes the material is authentic.

I'm not sure if they are fakes. Certainly not "blatant" fakes. The thing about it that doesn't add up to me is the fact that the memos would be written at all. On top of that, the memos seem more geared toward making Bush look bad--almost as though intended for use in a future political campaign--than to accomplish any military or personnel purpose.

It's particularly interesting that the guy who supposedly wrote them is dead, and they suddenly appear out of nowhere, even though the military could not find them when they went thru his personnel file.

To me, it seems that if CBS is going to throw this out as "news" and claim that it is genuine, then it must tell us where and how it got the info. Let us decide.

What the hell is wrong with the media in this country? It is very frightening how little they care about truth these days.

Two things:

1.) They want to reclaim the "gatekeeper" role that they've lost to the internet and "new media".

2.) They honestly believe that they'll have a place at the table in the new Politboro.

Usefull idiots all.

O/T: Bush in PA; hecklers removed from the event. Two sets of them.

So much for Bush vetting those who get in, huh?

WHERE IS MCCAIN?

Why is he not condemning the attack on Bush's National Guard record like he did when SBV's were probing Kerry's military record?

"OK......Someone needs to research whether the specific font used in these memos existed on the IBM at the time.

Who can do this?"

Tough to do. I've looked everywhere on the web, and cannot find a single example of a document typed on an IBM Executive. Nor can I find any font examples for that machine.

There are precious few of these in working order now. Perhaps a typewriter collector would have one.

Well the way the media is playing it you would think they were official. NO they are NOT. No one knows where they came from. Since Killian is DEAD.

Re: REM and Rather

Game Theory released a song called "Kenneth, What's the Frequency" (what was actually said to Rather) years before REM released "What's the frequency, Kenneth".

Just want to get that on the record.

I thought these were Pentagon release, not (claimed to be)from someone's personal files.
That makes a big difference.

From what I can tell .. they came from personal files of a man who has been dead for 20 years .. not from the Pentagon

CBS hasn't said exacting who gave them the memos

"The Selectric had proportional fonts.

"

Actually, it did not. The IBM Executive did, though. There was a later Selectric that was used as a compositor, but that was far later than these memos.

Especially since I still see people today in the military typing out memos on machines that can do it but don't use the function.

AND IN ALL CAPS.

Why is McCain not condemning the attack on Bush's National Guard record like he did when SBV's were probing Kerry's military record?

Because he is a phony Republican and a phony Bush-supporter. He wants to run in 2008. He likes his Senate buddy Kerry. Plus, he's a prick.

From one of the memos:

Harris gave me a message today from Grip (a headquarters unit) regarding Bush's OETR (officer efficiency training report) and Stuart is pushing to sugar coat it. Bush wasn't here during rating period and I don't have any comments from 187th in Alabama. I will not rate."

This is an explanation. "Message" is the Direct Object of the sentence. This theme is carried through and is the antecedent to the pronoun IT.

The theme is the message received from Grip. Therefore, the proper reading is this: "Stuart is pushing to sugar coat it." does not refer to Lt Bush's OETR, but it refers to the MESSAGE FROM GRIP.

Stuart is pushing to sugar coat the message from GRIP. The message from Grip probably is sarcastic about the conduct of this commander's office and his inability to decide if he'll rate Bush or not.

Stuart probably is saying, "don't take the sarcasm personally." but the Commander says, "I won't sugar coat the sarcasm about this HQ."

Instead, he's gonna finally make a decision and decide NOT to rate Lt Bush because he didn't really observe him.

I'm not convinced of the forgery theory. The military details in the documents make sense.

My dad was a full-time admin tech for the Ark Nat. Guard. He signed his company commander's signature on documents on a day to day basis because the company commander position was not a full-time position and he was never there. My dad and a supply seargeant were the only ones in the office full time out of the whole company. Not strictly kosher, but thats how it worked in order to keep the company running.
