New Questions On Bush Guard Duty

CBS) The military records of the two men running for president have become part of the political arsenal in this campaign – a tool for building up, or blowing up, each candidate’s credibility as America's next commander-in-chief.

While Sen. Kerry has been targeted for what he did in Vietnam, President Bush has been criticized for avoiding Vietnam by landing a spot in the Texas Air National Guard - and then failing to meet some of his obligations.

Did then-Lt. Bush fulfill all of his military obligations? And just how did he land that spot in the National Guard in the first place? Correspondent Dan Rather has new information on the president’s military service – and the first-ever interview with the man who says he pulled strings to get young George W. Bush into the Texas Air National Guard.

...

But 60 Minutes has obtained a number of documents we are told were taken from Col. Killian's personal file. Among them, a never-before-seen memorandum from May 1972, where Killian writes that Lt. Bush called him to talk about "how he can get out of coming to drill from now through November."

Lt. Bush tells his commander "he is working on a campaign in Alabama…. and may not have time to take his physical." Killian adds that he thinks Lt. Bush has gone over his head, and is "talking to someone upstairs."

Col. Killian died in 1984. 60 Minutes consulted a handwriting analyst and document expert who believes the material is authentic.

I decided to take your suggestion and looked back at John Kerry's DD214s, also from 1972.

Not only were multiple machines used, but proportional fonts as well.

Holy cow!

And the font used is no typewriter font, but a sloppy attempt to simulate it!

This deserves its own breaking news thread!

The news was all National Guard this morning. On and on and on. No balance whatsoever.

It seems to me if someone was going to concoct documents to indict Dubya they'd take the trouble to make the memos damaging

You're correct, the memo's themself are not damaging .. besides they would be contradictory to what Killian wrote in the President's evaluation

But they sure do keep the story going don't they?

Refer to Memo 04 May 1972

The heading has 111th typed as if before superscript was available.

Section 1 - You are ordered to report to commander, 111 F.I.S. - Note total absence of "th" in any form.

Section 2 - Report to 111 superscript th

In such a short memo, would anyone use, three different ways to type the 111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron?

An inexperienced typist may.

Did LTC in the ANG routinely type their own stuff, even CYA's?

The rank abbreviations used in the memos are wrong - Or maybe my mind is wrong about when the military changed the rank abbreviations. But best I can remember they are as follows: 2LT; 1LT; CPT; MAJ; LTC; COL; Etc. I do not think any military person would use the abbreviations as indicated in the memos. If this person was the commander he would have used LTC, Commanding for his signature block.

CBS states that it "consulted a handwriting analyst and document expert who believes the material is authentic."

Well, let's see, Ray Charles is dead so they must have used Stevie Wonder.

Thank you for your reply!

Many questions about these memos. I hope the media questions their authenticity. As should the WH, obviously!

Indeed. I would find it to be "poetic justice" for the documents presented to be authentic by the conventional media were shown to be forgeries by the new media. It would be like the NYT Jason Blair incident on steroids.

Yep and they'll use that DU'd to death poll as justification for saying the American people want more on this in the evening news. MSNBC is bad news. Land of the retro glasses wearing hip to cool leftist set.

I think it's interesting that CBS is keeping mum on who gave them the documents. What's the big secret? (wink wink)

Because CBS admits they did not have Killian's actual personal file. They were given these memos by an unnamed someone they refuse to identify who claimed the memos came from Killian's file.

I thought these were Pentagon release, not (claimed to be)from someone's personal files. That makes a big difference.

The key to this is not Bush's record 30 years ago, it is the diversion from Traitor John's records 30 years ago.

%%%%%

I agree. We are being treated to an elaborate shell game courtesy of the Kerry campaign wholly-owned subsidiary - Old Media.

Thanks for the ping!

Geesh! Using a handwriting 'expert' when they should have used an expert in typewriting/computer technology.

I don't know why CBS didn't just go to the Psychic Friends Hot line!
