WASHINGTON AP) - The Bush administration differed Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that only a political settlement could end the crisis between Russia and the breakaway region of Chechnya.

The administration also left open the possibility of U.S. meetings with Chechens who are not linked to terrorists.

Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage signed a book of condolences at the Russian Embassy over the deaths of at least 330 people, most of them children, during a hostage-taking last week at a school in the southern city of Beslan.

"I'd be for burying those monsters in Chechnya alive in a mass grave. I'll dig the hole and then toss the dirt. Who's with me?"

Sure. I'm with you. Now, all we have to do is round them up. Where are they? What are their names? Let's go get 'em.

"Apparently, a heckuva lot of folks here do not."

Bush has said all the right things regarding Beslain, the state dept. has not. Whose side are YOU on, the presidents? or the state Dept's? Just a hint, the state dept. is full of Ivy school liberals who would do anything to increase their own influence, even at the expense of their own countries best interests.

Who do you think is in charge of the State Department?

It matters not. Replace him with a patriot warrior who is willing to fight terrorism and terrorists. We already know what Neville Chamberlain did. We don't need to repeat that history.

"That's the only option left to the Russians, IMO. Were we fit in, is the messy part now"

Even the Russians aren't that stupid. Where do we fit in? I'd say we don't, really. This is a very old problem, the Russia-Chechnya problem. It's been going on for a very long time.

Negotiate with the newly-elected leaders of the region. That's about the only thing to do, really. As someone else has pointed out, the Chechen terrorists are not Chechnya.

This is insane!? Is this true?
Then again, the source is AP, same place that ran the story about the crowd booing when Bush was giving his best wishes for Clinton for his heart condition, which turned out to be bogus!

I guess the State Dept. has decided to flip flop on the War on Terror as well.....

Bush needs to stifle this nonsense if he wants credibility on terrorism...

There can be no "diplomatic solution" with people who shoot kids in the back....The Russians should hunt 'em down, smoke 'em out, and bring them to justice.....And Colin Powell needs a big cup of Shut the F*ck Up.

The U.S Government is giving the Russians and the Israelis very different advice on terrorism than the one in maintains for itself. If Al Qaeda murders 3,000 Americans, its evil, beyond the pale can't talk to them. But by golly, the Russians better talk to child killers and the Israelis should sit down without those who blow up busses. I'm sick of the State Department's double standard in the War On Terror. Colon Bowell is out of his freakin' mind!

It is sad how the war on terrorism seems to be a pretext for waging tribal or religious war for some folks. President Bush has consistently stated that we not in a war against Islam or Muslims, the problem is terrorism and those who support it.

Islam is the enemy and should be blamed. Name any conflict in the world...there is an Islamic component. As for the Chechnyans if they were against these people they would rat them out instead of offering them protection which is what is happening. What some people on this post are saying is we can't eradicate terrorism...negotiante, live with it...etc. I tell you, the west can not co-exist with Islamic terrorists. There can be no negotiation... with suicidal murderers. They are liars who will respect no agreement. Most people believed we could not destroy terrorism, but we did. These people must be destroyed. If this means destroying the entire Middle East (except for Israel) then so be it.

All of a sudden there is outrage? Isn't this all a part of the "War Extreme Irritation Against Terror"?

I'm still trying to get a calendar count of how long after 911 Arafat was coddled along the Roadmap to Pieces. There seems to be an ebb and flow of what the meaning of "linked to terrorists" is at Foggy Bottom, Capital Hill, and - yes - 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

"Bush has said all the right things regarding Beslain, the state dept. has not. Whose side are YOU on, the presidents? or the state Dept's?"

Bush runs the State Department. He's the President, and the Department of State is part of the Executive Branch.

So, I'm on Bush's side. I was on his side when he expressed the idea that Islam was a religion of peace. I was on his side when he declared war on terrorism. Islam does not equal terrorism.

Do you think it so far-fetched that our President is in favor of diplomatic solutions to the Chechnya issue? I don't. President Bush has been a leader in proposing self-rule in Afghanistan and Iraq. That has been his goal all along, and he has said so quite clearly.

Yes, kill all the terrorists, but kill as few innocent people as you can. That's Bush's goal, and he's said it all along.

If President Bush thinks it's a good idea to let Sadr live, for example, and to make him part of the new government, then he must have good reasons to do so, and is getting advice from folks a heckuva lot more knowledgable than I am.

I thought FR was behind our President.

"So, why did the Germans and Japanese quit? hmmmmmmmm?"

Because they were countries with standing armies that had been almost completely wiped out, their homelands had been rightfully bombed into oblivion, and further resistance was futile.

The comparisons of Islime terrorism to WWII aren't valid. Islime can't be held to treaties. Unless you're suggesting to bring OBL and Gang to the table to sign a surrender treaty? You don't think they'd honor it, do you? Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

That's why we don't kill people like Sadr. Do that and you create a bunch of new terrorists.

Like WWII or the Civil War, the war is over ONLY when you kill the motivation to join a lost cause. Before then you haven't accomplished a damn thing. You and a lot of other people just don't have the guts to see enough people killed fast enough to get a WWII type conclusion. People like you cause the killing of OUR SIDE to go on forever because it is obvious they don't need martyrs to keep turning out terrorists.

Why do you consider our soldiers less important than 'innocent civilians'. Do you not know that waging this kind of war causes our soldiers to die in greater rates then if we fought with overwhelming force (Powell doctrine before he became corrupted by Foggy Bottom)?

Are there people in Chechnya who do not support these terrorists, like ethnic Russians? Are the terrorists representative of the Chechnyian people?

Perhaps this issue is whether Putin wants to
go after a whole population, instead of just those who support terrorism. I admit I don't know all the facts.
