WASHINGTON AP) - The Bush administration differed Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that only a political settlement could end the crisis between Russia and the breakaway region of Chechnya.
The administration also left open the possibility of U.S. meetings with Chechens who are not linked to terrorists.
Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage signed a book of condolences at the Russian Embassy over the deaths of at least 330 people, most of them children, during a hostage-taking last week at a school in the southern city of Beslan.

Outrageous. I think we need to demonstrate support here--complete alliance against Islamic terrism.
It's bad enough those of us in North America didn't organize any official remembrance/moment of silence.
Hundreds of thousands of people paraded through the streets of Rome, holding candles. Granted, that may not have been government-organized, but it would have been a great gesture to have something official to demonstrate to Russian leaders and people our solidarity with them in this struggle.

Do you honestly believe that the State Department issues such things without administration approval? Look at the administration's plan for Iraq and Afghanistan. This is coming straight from the administration.
Russia MUST negotiate with the elected leaders of the Chechen region to try to establish some sort of peace there. Yes, the terrorists must be killed, but they're a small minority of the region's population.
For Pete's sake, we can't just blast the whole region to smithereens.
Who do you think is in charge of the State Department?
The same dude in charge of ALL the Executive Branch departments, the President.

Why not? Peace with Islam exists contingent on two terms:
-Surrender and Conversion
-Surrender and Enslavement

If it is as you suggest, then we should not have gone there in the first place...I am for killing as many terrorists as possible. They will be the one's shooting at us-not difficult to identify. The government will be left in place-with our backing. This means going back and killing more terrorist if neccesary. If we allow Iraq to become an Islamic state then we have indeed lost...the situation will be worse than it was when saddam was in power.

Who are? What are their names? Don't you understand. Terrorists don't wear uniforms or name badges. They come out, do their deeds, then fade back into the general population.
How do you identify them so you can kill them? Unbelievable. Take Iraq, for example. The terrorists there are walking around on the street. They remain a small percentage of the population, but how do you know which Iraqi is a terrorist and which is just a poor schlub trying to feed his family?
That's why we don't kill people like Sadr. Do that and you create a bunch of new terrorists. Bush could have ordered him killed at any time, but did not. Now Sadr will have some sort of official capacity in the new Iraq government. Yesterday he was a terrorist. Now he's OK.
To kill a terrorist, you must first find him. It isn't that easy, especially when you don't even speak the language of the country you're in.
You can vote for whoever you want to vote for in November, but at least engage your common sense when posting.
The Chechen terrorists are not the government of Chechnya, nor are they the people of Chechnya...that is unless we equate one with the other my blaming the whole of the Chechen people for the actions of the terrorists.
The way that terrorists gain power is by committing atrocities in the hopes that the atrocities are blamed on a much larger group of people than themselves.
When we blame all of Islam for the action of Muslim extremists, we empower them. When we blame all of Chechnya for the actions of the Chechen terrorists, we equally empower them.
If these talks fail as they did in Afghanistan, then a military solution is all that's left.
