September 6, 2004 -- Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani's speech at the Republican National Convention swayed more voters to re-elect President Bush than the speeches given by Sen. John McCain and Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a new poll shows. Giuliani's 40-minute speech Monday night convinced 24 percent of those polled to vote for the GOP ticket, according to a recent Newsweek poll.That's compared to 20 percent who said they were more likely to vote for Bush after hearing Schwarzenegger's speech Tuesday night. Just 20 percent said McCain's speech persuaded them to vote Republican in the Nov. 2 election.
Giuliani is said to be considering a presidential run in 2008, but some say his pro-choice, pro-gay rights record wouldn't make a good fit for a GOP ticket.

We will need a national figure like Giulani to beat Clinton. By then, hopefully, the new supreme court justices will be confirmed so his liberalism on social matters won't matter as much

LSM say the conventions of neither party are important. They're not news. They strive to give "equal time". They do not want to allow either party to give their message directly to the voters.
I watched on CSpan, but without seeing even one moment of network coverage, bet I can tell you what the network talking heads were telling viewers. The conventions are only a show & do not show people the real party.
I'd like to see the numbers for CSpan too. CSpan, the quiet network that helped change the nation. Newt's rise to power began there.
Dense populations? That explains why all those states went for Gore in 2000.

If Giuliani could beat Hillary in the 2006 Senate race in NY, then we might not have to worry about her running for President. Of course if it looks like he will run for the Senate seat, she could choose not to run for a second term (in order to gear up for the 2008 race).

25% Laura Bush- Women voters
24% Giuliani- Americans (9-11)
22% Arnold- Immigrants, Liberals
21% Zell- conservative Democrats
20% McCain- Independents
19% Dick Cheney- Conservative base
There were other speakers that hit other voters but I think the Republicans did well with this list. These people all have different views on some conservative policies but those differences are well known. They spoke to what they were in agreement with and gave their support to the Prez. That is the best way to connect to voters that might not vote Republican because they have disagreements on certain issues. Tell them, yes, I have the same issues but these guys welcomed me! It's okay to vote Republican.
All of the speeches were excellent but I loved the anger Zell spilled all over the dims. That is the same anger I feel for them. I could relate.

This constant fawning over rinos or the more pathethic "well who else is going to defeat hillary" crap is pathetic. It's groupthink - someobody puts it out there (hell, maybe rudy did) and now no one can think beyond that little soundbite.
Here's a little clue - not many people thought of GWB during the 1996 election cycle to run for president in 2000. There IS time to find a better candidate than rudy - we don't have to choose now.

It's like one person said it so now all unimaginitive freepers repeat it. "Wow, that makes sense- we have to run a liberal republican against a liberal democrat". Does that make sense to you?
Picking rudy or mccain because you think "only he can beat hillary" is like picking kerry because "only he can beat bush". It's the same damn thing - a candidate that doesn't inspire his base (conservative republicans) but is merely a vessel for hatred of the other candidate.
Hiilary will not be defeated by offering a "anybody but hillary" candidate. She will not be defeated by offering up a 'popular' candidate that was made popular by the mainstream press, because the mainstream press can tear that candidate down when they run against hillary.
She will be defeated by running a candidate that energizies the majority of the base AND can communicate his core principles well to the rest of the country.
There are four years to go. Don't spout off about how rinos are our only hope when you don't even know who will be running in the republican primaries.
