THE full horror of the Russian school atrocity began to emerge yesterday as traumatised children told horrific tales of stabbed babies and brutal rapes.
It has also emerged that scores of the 323 who died - including many children - had been shot in the back.
While despairing soldiers and rescue workers moved among the growing pile of body bags, it was revealed that an 18-month-old baby had been repeatedly stabbed by a black-clad terrorist who had run out of ammunition.
Other survivors told how screaming teenage girls were dragged into rooms adjoining the gymnasium where they were being held and raped by their Chechen captors who chillingly made a video film of their appalling exploits
They said children were forced to drink their own urine and eat the petals off the flowers they had brought their teachers after nearly three days without food or water in the stifling hot gym.
Their stories came as Russian officials warned that the final death toll of the siege of Middle School No 1 at Beslan in North Ossetia - in which up to 1,200 people were held captive - was likely to be more than 400.
The official toll yesterday stood at 323 which included 156 children, 10 Russian soldiers and two emergency service workers - 35 of the hostage-takers were also killed. Last night 434 people were being treated in hospital with 247 children and 85 adults in a critical condition.
A Russian official said six seriously injured children had been taken to Moscow for treatment.
"One of them is a child, just 18 months old, with many knife wounds," he said.

When Mohammed is criticized for ordering massacres and such, his defenders will say, "In those days, Christian rulers did the same thing." That may be true, but no one holds his contemporaries such as Justinian and Theodora of the Byzantine Empire up as models for humanity for all time. That's the difference. Christians did things then that are not acceptable today -- most Muslims, mentally and morally, are still stuck in the early middle ages.
Still waiting for Russia's response. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, assuming this is just a mourning period before they retaliate.

Look at it this way -- you are doing a Muslim a favor by killing him. He goes to heaven and gets his 72 wives and 28 boys. By the way, what exactly are those 28 boys for? He he. I can only guess but I don't want to discuss.
For every terrorist, there are 50-75 people working to fund him. They are terrorists just as much as the ones raping the babies and shooting the children.
Those poor little "hostage-takers" are just misunderstood.
I can't bring myself to read the full story, the excerpts are bad enough.
May God (not Allah) pour out His grace on the survivors, and families of the victims.
They probably think that the public is more interested in the weather in Florida than the terrorist attack in Russia.
What I was pleased to hear was that several of the local Russian gentlemen had ran home and got their rifles. They were willing to defend their families. Even though the outcome was not as we had wished I can appreciate the fact that these men were going to do what they felt was their only option and that was defending their people through their abity to own firearms. Before this act of war I never thought I had much in common with Russians. Now all that has changed.
And how you expect Russia to retaliate? Take several hundred Chechen children as hostages? It could help, to some extend-or vicewerse, local population will rise a riot never seen before. Total henocide? Desision it is. And even took place-in 1944, all Chechens were sent to Kazakhstan for mass betrayal; now it's described as one of Stalin's crimes. Attac Chechen bases in Georgia? There are american soldiers, and US won't ever let Russia do it. Attac Saudi Arabia and Iordania? What would lord Judd say, as well as US again? Russia now is not as strong as US'2003 and even not strong as USSR'80. Unfortunately, we have to settle almost every our move with Western countries, which often behave contradictory.
