SEE-BS News finally got around to the story after spending 10 minutes talking about Abu Ghraib and Gitmo.

Yeah. The upper bound is how many bombs big enough (0.5kilo?) to kill a plane can you sneak in and get into baggage before being caught? Three might be pushing one's luck. Must have been easy to rehearse, though. I wonder who found unexplained objects in their luggage recently?

There are almost as many Tupolov jets at the bottom of the sea as there are Vodka bottles over there.

Do the Russians use black boxes? Maybe there will be a clue.

The TU-154 will have both a CVR and FDR. Depending on the age of the TU-134 and how much it has been updated, it could have only a FDR or it could have both.

That's not good. There was a thread earlier today on FR that I didn't pay any attention to and don't remember the sourcing that said Russian and Georgia were close to war.

No way bad fuel. Seperate tanks, feeds, header tanks.

Plus, a turbine engine will burn about anything.

This was not a fuel-driven or weather-driven incident.

Quotes:
'"We'll start with a gentle "No evidence of terrorism." (Because it's all still smouldering {sic} in a field!)'
'"All I'm saying is people here are so knee-jerk that they want to blame every air crash on terrorism, shoe bombers, terrorist carried man portable SAMS, or a rogue U.S. Navy ship.''

So you do work for the government?
You use their broad brush quite well.

More detail:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/08/24/russia.planecrash/

A passenger jet carrying 34 passengers and eight crew members in the Tula region crashed about 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Moscow, the ministry said.

Witnesses reported seeing the plane explode before it crashed, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.

The second plane, carrying 44 passengers and eight crew members, went down about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Rostov-on-Don, in southern Russia, government-run Ria Novosti reported.

The first plane disappeared from radar at 10:56 p.m. (2:56 p.m. ET), the news agency said.

The Tupolev-134 had taken off from Moscow's Domodedovo Airport and was en route to Volgograd, in southern Russia.

The second plane, a Tupolev-154, disappeared from radar at 10:59 p.m. (2:59 p.m. ET) after having taken off from the same airport en route to Sochi, a tourist resort on the Black Sea in southern Russia, the ministry spokeswoman reported.
